The Full Brexit Newsletter #4 - January 2019 |
Happy new year, and welcome to all of our new subscribers! The respite of Christmas is now over and the Remainer onslaught on Brexit in parliament has resumed in earnest. Theresa May has promised her "meaningful vote" next week and is seeking inevitably meaningless "assurances" from the EU to win over MPs. Her miserable deal looks set to fall, but what happens next is anyone's guess. The logic of The Full Brexit's analysis to date leads us to expect that the inept, Remainer-dominated political class will soon seek to bounce decision-making over Brexit back to the electorate, through a second referendum. Far from displaying the health of British democracy, a second vote would only signify its degradation, as elites refuse to implement a result they have twice promised to implement - once before the referendum, and once in the 2017 general election. All true democrats - whether they supported Leave or Remain in 2016 - must gear up to defend representative democracy in 2019. Ironically, its greatest threat comes from our so-called representatives in parliament. This newsletter showcases new analysis, warning of the likelihood and likely impact of a second referendum; another contribution to the debate on the Withdrawal Agreement; and more commentaries and media appearances by The Full Brexit co-founders. As ever, if you have any ideas or suggestions, or want to get more involved, please contact us at fullbrexit@gmail.com. |

Last month we published a debate on the Withdrawal Agreement, with a short summary of the deal followed by the case for accepting it, then the case against. Now we present another argument for rejection. |

British Politics in Chaos: Brexit and the Crisis of Representative Democracy Chaos in parliament reflects a deep crisis in Britain's representative democracy. Political elites have lost the capacity to represent societal interests and their authority has, accordingly, imploded, says Lee Jones.

We Already Had Empire 2.0: It's Called the EU Despite accusing Leavers of 'imperial nostalgia', it is Remainers who fear Britain's loss of influence, and the EU that is the vehicle for imperialist ambitions after formal empire, argues Philip Cunliffe.

Parliament at the Cliff Edge: Why a Second Referendum Could Destroy Its Authority If parliament refuses to implement the referendum result, having twice promised to do so, its authority - derived from claims to represent the electorate - will lie in tatters, argues Peter Ramsay.

Writing in The Morning Star, TFB co-founder Lord Maurice Glasman argues that Brexit offers the opportunity for socialists to lead a political transformation of Britain.

TFB's Lee Jones appeared again on TRT to debate a second referendum, facing Labour's former Europe minister, Denis Macshane, who welcomed the deaths of many Leave voters since 2016, saying they'd gone to "the great Brexit in the sky".
Writing for Briefings for Brexit, TFB co-founder Richard Tuck argues that calls for a second referendum are nothing more than attempts to corrupt the democratic process to wreck Brexit.
