SEPTEMBER SHOUTOUT

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE MAGIC OF SEPTEMBER

My September Reset

This weekend marks the end of September—my favorite time of year as we transition to shorter days, cooler weather and all things fall! It's magical!

If you have been reading my writing for any length of time, you’ve likely encountered my favorite article of all time, Reframe on September, where I claim, "September is the new January!" If you haven’t read this, click HERE to do so. And for those of you who have already, keep it in mind as you hit the reset button as we round the corner on 2023!

As for me, September is always full of new energy and school is a big piece of that in our household. Both of my kids are plugging away at their schools this year. Ben is a sophomore at San Marcos High School while Zack is doing hybrid school and spending part of his time at a new campus here in Santa Barbara called Fusion Academy (which is a 1:1 learning environment). Fusion has been a game changer for him and for his academic success. (Feel free to reach out and ask me more about this if you’re interested.)

I wish you all the best Fall Vibes as we settle into shorter days and longer nights—my favorite!

Microstress: The Itch That's Hard to Scratch

One of my September "New Year resolutions" is to make my life less stressful. In my latest Santa Barbara Independent article, I discuss the idea of microstresses. These are moments of stress that are caused by routine interactions with other people that are so routine you barely notice them. Microstress may be small, but its cumulative impact on your health and well-being can be significant. A good metaphor is a teacup to which you keep adding a little more liquid. You add a little more, a little more, and it’s holding on at the top — until you add one extra drop, and it spills over. That’s the effect of microstress. In the article, I discuss ways we can recognize and combat microstress.

What I'm Practicing

6 Essential Books On Meditation & Mindfulness for Beginners

It turns out, one way to fight
"microstress" is to meditate. That's why I've been creating more time for meditation in my daily routine. The Good Trade published an article providing six books on meditation and mindfulness. I've found the whole list helpful. I encourage you to check it out if you too are interested in learning more about these practices.

What I'm Reading

The Emotional Lives of Teenagers

As you can guess, being a mom to two teen boys is equal parts enjoyable, frustrating, and overwhelming. Therefore, a lot of what I read deals with learning how to equip them for living their best lives. I'm currently listening to the audio book The Emotional Lives of Teenagers and discovering so many important and easy to implement practices. I'm grateful to Lisa Damour, Ph.D. and the wisdom she is sharing with us in this book. If you too are raising teens, be sure to check it out!
