Newsletter #21 - February 23, 2023.

Greetings Fellow Adventurers

Topic 1 of 6: Skiing and Proprioception

Just returned from our Breckenridge ski trip. It was a blast. Skiing allows our inner child to surface. I think because of proprioception. This concept relates to our sense of self movement, force, and body position. Research shows proprioception plays a central role in carrying out coordinated movements and for balance and controlling body posture. It is especially important in order to stay active as we age. Skiing and other active adventures helps build our proprioception assets.

Topic 2 of 6: Books and Ideas

Think Again discussion

Tuesday March 7th at 5:30 PM Central time Info and RSVP

We discuss his ideas of The Imposter syndrome, The psychology of constructive conflict, Collective rethinking, and more.
It is not necessary to have read the book to participate. This book is both innovative and relevant across personal and professional domains.

Think of Books and Ideas as an extended book club with two parts:

(1) A video summary of the book posted prior to the workshop that members can watch at their leisure You can find it here, and

(2) a workshop where attendees discuss related ideas to consider their relevance for possible adoption. Info and RSVP

Topic 3 of 6: Hiking / Rucking trek in Forest Park

Join us for a hike/ruck in Forest Park on 3/4/2023 Info and RSVP

Rucking is hiking with a weighted backpack. Many find that rucking is better that walking/hiking for gaining fitness. And, compared to jogging/running, there is a reduced risk of injury. It is a great way to get in shape for your hiking adventures this summer. You start with light weights and build up as you gain fitness. See Dr Peter Attia's discussion on the benefit of rucking.

Looking down the road (no pun intended) we plan to have a rucking event in the STL area this fall. Plans include family picnic and all sorts of random fun. Details to come.

Topic 6 of 6: Character - Teddy Roosevelt

Recently I have been thinking about what gives a person "character." As a case study, I have been reading about Teddy Roosevelt. He seems to have the central elements of a quintessential character. His daughter wrote "My father always wanted to be the corpse at every funeral, the bride at every wedding and the baby at every christening." Alice Roosevelt Longworth cited here. He was a man of convictions (conservator of natural wonders) and contradictions (big game hunting for endangered species).

Who do you see as a historical character? Why?
