Rally! Season 2, Issue 9: December 2022

Community & Culture

On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, President Biden signed into law a bipartisan bill that codifies same-sex and interracial marriages. "The road to this moment has been long, but those who believe in equality and justice – you never gave up," Biden said. The Respect For Marriage Act represents an important evolution of civil rights in our country. Its signing repeals DOMA, it makes it so that other states have to recognize same-sex marriages across state lines and that same-sex couples are entitled to the same federal benefits of any other married couple, but it certainly is not the end of the fight. Some people are celebrating, some are merely relieved, and some are again reminded that this is not a moment to become complacent.

The holidays, too, are a reminder that moments that we all seem to share at the same time for the same reason can impact each person differently. So, for Community & Culture this month, we wanted to echo this sage and simple advice posted on Instagram by @GregLouganis: “The holidays can be stressful. When you find yourself triggered or stressed, pause and do something enjoyable. Dance, laugh or think of something that makes you smile.”

True Colors by CHEER Seattle

December’s feature team is CHEER Seattle, the 6th of the 6 original founding PCA Member Teams. In 2014, the universe brought together three people to co-found CHEER Seattle who are still very active in PCA partnership today: Mark Hedelund (CSEA Board of Directors, CSEA Performing Volunteer, PCA Treasurer), Sara Toogood (CSEA FGG Delegate, PCA Secretary), and Anthony Alston (CSEA Performing Volunteer, first CSEA President, and FGG Officer of Culture). Watch CHEER Seattle’s True Colors video! We guarantee you’ll discover something new about CHEER Seattle, and you’ll probably learn a thing or two about geography and topography, sports, and copyright law! Take notes, and thank us later when you’re the MVP at your next trivia fundraiser!

PCA News

Marketing:

Last month we introduced you to the PCA Brand House (here it is)! The Brand House has been utilized to freshen up the PCA website (pridecheerleading.org) and informs everything we do as brand, including our PCA ProShop. Have you noticed the apparel has inclusive naming (no gender specific names for products) and inclusive sizing? This is not by accident. Inclusion is one of our core values. The simple array of style choices is also by design. To UNITE our member teams and volunteers is one of our four Pillars of Purpose - and we will UNITE in style at the Sin City Classic in January. Buy your PCA logo gear TODAY and wear it with us for an optional PCA-wide photo shoot on Sin City Sunday!

Events: REGISTER NOW to participate with PCA at the Sin City Classic: January 13-15, 2023. Support LGBTQ+ athletics, perform with your team and with the PCA family, and fundraise for our beneficiary: Golden Rainbow. Pay close attention, as registration has separate ticket types for Saturday’s volunCHEERing bus tour, for Sunday’s competition, and a bundle-and-save for both! The judging rulebook and scoresheet for the competition (Partner Stunt and Group Stunt divisions) were released this month and posted here. Music is due to PCA by January 4 and registration closes on January 6. When booking travel, plan to maximize the PCA experience by arriving in time for the Friday evening Welcome Party (5-9pm) and staying through the Sunday night Brooklyn Bowl Closing Party (8pm - 1am). If you’ve done all your travel booking, event registration, and sent in your music, the last thing on your list is: STAY HEALTHY! And please take time to read PCA’s SCC 2023 COVID-19 Policy so you are prepared.

Education: Reminder that the PCA Summit 2022 asynchronous webinars are housed in a password protected digital library which is available to - all and only - PCA volunCHEERleaders. Topics include: inclusive language, web accessibility, cheerleading with disabilities, financial statements, systems and paperwork strategies, social media content calendars, performance anxiety, social identity, public health, and Cheer ASL (American Sign Language). Ask your team Delegate for the password!

Admin: Year-end reminder to our PCA Member Teams: PCA Membership Dues, proof of insurance, Member Team Renewal Form, and Member Team Data Sheet are all being collected now. Next month, PCA will be sending out the annual (optional) PCA Volunteer Demographic Survey created by the PCA Equity and Inclusion (E&I) Committee. Every volunteer within your org should be given the opportunity to fill it out. The E&I Committee reviews the data and trends, which not only help us learn more about who we are and who we are naturally growing to become, but also help guide PCA to set measurable goals for better representation and inclusion.
