ASA Books: Summer Reading At The Library |
ASA Books hopes your summer has been full of adventure. We hope you've found the time to take long walks, enjoy the outdoors, and most of all escape in a good book. We, at ASA Books, have been out and about, doing what we love best and that's sharing our stories and our love of reading with our community. In July: ASA Books participated in the City of Stories program through Chicago Public Library. We read to a beautiful group of children at Bessie Coleman Library. What a joy it was to share our stories, When The Sun Comes Up & When The Moon Comes Up. We also shared a sneak peek into our newest book, Don't Run From The Sun where were were able to complete our positivity shield activity with the children. It was a lot of fun. A special thank you to the head Librarian, Ms. Valerie Carter, who brought us in. In August: ASA Books donated 10 books to the John B. Drake Elementary School in Chicago during their Back To School event. It was a true honor to have our books as part of a collection of books provided by the Chicago Housing Authority, which gave out free books as well to the beautiful children and staff of the Drake School. In September: ASA Books will be vending around the city, so we hope you can stop on by. On Saturday, September 10th, we will be participating in Black Wall Street, presented by Woodlawn Fest. Then, on Saturday, September 17th we head to Evanston, IL to participate in the Black Child Book Fair. We are excited to share our stories with all of you! See details below. |

ASA Books Talks About The Law With Shaping Young Minds |
ASA Books is grateful to have participated in the July show of Shaping Young Minds (SYM), which airs on CanTV, a local television network in Chicago. We had the privilege to host a panel discussion with special guests, Elijah Robinson and Nylah Robinson who talked about law enforcement professionals and why the men and women who serve as Police Officers are important to us all. We led with a Fun Fact of the Day: What is the name of the 1st black police officer in Chicago? Police Officer James L. Shelton is his name and he was the first African American officer to join the Chicago Police Department in 1871. We then discussed four different types of police officers, which included (1) Detectives (2) Fish and Game Wardens (2) Forest Rangers (4) Harbor Police. We rounded out our discussion by sharing books about Police Officers that we checked out from the Chicago Public Library and encouraged parents to visit the Public Library to get books on this topic and many more. |

Don't Run From The Sun Is Almost Ready To Shine Our summer release is ALMOST HERE. The count down is on..... |
Don’t Run From The Sun is a story, in rhyme, about a young boy and girl who are afraid to play in the sun because they fear their skin color will get darker if they do. This soft, yet powerful tale teaches the importance of being proud of your skin tone; whether light or dark, never letting the power of the sun stop you from having fun. The story lends a kind, yet strong message for kids of all backgrounds, but specifically children of color, who may get teased for being of a darker hue. It is an affirmation for kids of all colors, that being kissed by the sun is to be celebrated and not shaded. |
