The Birds!

After the tremendous demand for bird boxes we can safely say that the birds of Bugthorpe won't be short of somewhere to nest for spring!

45 boxes were delivered ready for the nesting season.

Did you get yours? Are you going to paint it? Where are you going to put it?

We would absolutely love to hear from you about the success of your bird box, and please feel free to send us any photo's you get.

Thank you to everyone who purchased a bird box (or two), this has been a fantastic results.

Now that the birds are well catered for we not turn our attention to the bees.

The Bees!

We are encouraging everyone to plant a range of wild flower seeds either in a border or pots to provide for the bees this summer. Lots of flowers have been bred by gardeners to look spectacular, but they are of little value to flower-feeding insects because they don't produce enough nectar or pollen.

Organisations such as the Royal Horticultural Society, the British Beekeepers Society, Butterfly Conservation, and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, have provided a list of attractive plants that you can grow to help flower-feeding insects throughout the year.

Using these lists, we have selected some flowers that are easy to grow from seed and will look nice in your garden this summer. Most importantly, they will provide lots of nectar and pollen for Honey Bees, Bumblebees, Solitary Bees and other flower-feeding insects such as Hoverflies and Butterflies. They will of course also provide a splash of colour throughout the village for us all to enjoy.

We have separate packs of Cornflower, Ox Eye Daisy, Corn Marigolds and Borage seeds. Each pack is enough to cover a metre square of ground and costs just 50p. We also have Sunflower seeds that are 50p for a pack of 20. The small profit made from this will be going towards maintaining the village website domain name.

Why not buy a pack of each and create your own mini meadow!
