hey there, ! i hope 2023 has been kind to you so far. this is my first newsletter I'm putting out. I'm not really sure how this is going to work, or what exactly its going to become eventually, but I love writing letters to people. So I thought "letters from ness" would be an interesting way to include that in what I do, and share a little more about myself as an artist. I hope i can give you a little insight into the things I enjoy, what I work on besides creating for social media, as well as just some inspiration for the day! So hi! I'm so glad to be writing to you <3 |

January was quite an interesting month. I was pretty much completely occupied with preparing for my uni exams & submissions. I did not have much spare time to create art on my own, but I did explore a few different things! |

I've been seeing paper making videos for a long time now, but I never really dared to try it out myself. During December last year I found a bunch of scrap paper lying around and just taking up space, so I thought I'd put it to some good use. In the beginning of this month, I tried out paper making for the first time. |

I put together my own mould and deckle and made a few test runs. Its literally just a repurposed silk screen kit. I definitely don't have the perfect tools as yet, but I do hope to get there. I really loved diving into this craft. Once I've streamlined my process a bit more and studied the kind of paper I'm able to produce, I hope to make some 100% handmade journals for my shop, including the bookbinding and everything. It's really exciting to think about! I'll be sure to keep you updated. |

a goal I made for myself for this year was to finish this sketchbook i've had since 2019 (so I can buy the new one I've been eyeing hehe). I've been trying to fill at least one side of the spread everyday. I sketch some references, or things I got that day, things around me, maybe add some journaling or anything else, really. so far, i've been using my 2B pencil, a brown ball pen, and on some pages even a dip pen and drawing ink to get my hand to loosen up. an intention i set is i will draw everything i come across, and sometimes even give myself a time limit. the idea is to just just sit with my sketchbook for a little bit and create something. it's been really fun so far! |

I've always found repeating patterns so fascinating. For one of my uni projects, I decided to learn how to create a repeating pattern, so I can design packaging materials with whimsical illustrations on them, such as tissue paper that might be used for wrapping. I didn't really follow any tutorials for this, I just went for it on a whim and worked around what made sense to me, and hey! it works! The project called for designing and creating a brand from scratch, and this was a part of that. My particular project focusses on meal planning solutions. Further down in my semester, I'll be creating more packaging designs, trying to include my passion for illustrating in them, and make them as "artsy" as i can. I'll be sure to share how this project comes along in the future. I'm not sure how much of it I can share, but I'll be giving you a little glimpse for sure! |

here's a little collection of books, videos, youtube channels and other things i found inspiring this month! i'm always on the lookout for anything that inspires me or brings me joy, and excited to share them with you. enjoy :) |

this lovely graphic design book doing the uni project i mentioned earlier put me through several challenges, and it was getting quite overwhelming for me. i was recommended this book to follow for the graphic design process and boy, this is good stuff. it used simple language and explanation to get the point across and it really did help me with my process. also, the book feels great in your hands. |

this book about about creating transformative hobbies i've just started to read this book. and i'm already in love. it follows many different creative activities that require you to use your hands, and appreciate all that you can do with them. it covers things like baking, cooking, fermenting things, self care, soap making, gardening & things with fabric, and SO many little projects for you to try under each of the categories. truly incredible. also a big underlying message in this book is practicing mindfulness, which is another thing i'm very passionate about. plus, it looks adorable. |

leigh ellexxon's videos i've been absolutely loving her studio vlogs the past few weeks. especially now since i have a little more time on my hands i've pretty much been binge watching her videos. seeing her run her shop, create her studio space and learning from her work ethic is really inspiring. I love the art she creates and the cozy vibes she gives off in her videos. |

julian baumgartner's restoration videos there's just something so comforting about this channel. julian, the conservator, is a wonderful storyteller. the way he explains his process of carrying out the conservation or restoration of artefacts is genuinely so relaxing. he does such a good job of creating that emotional connect with what he's working on. definitely a binge-worthy channel in my book. |

here's the plan- animated short film believe me when i tell you, i cried watching this. it's an 18 minute short film, but it does such a good job of engaging you. literal rollercoaster of emotions. its really well done. the animation and art style is really beautiful, and the lighting is gorgeous. there's a slight shaking in the camera movements, giving it a very organic feel. i really loved this one. totally recommend checking it out! |
