Note from the Director

September 2022

Getting the word out about our gallery through advertising and signage is a key step to reaching the community. We have several ongoing advertising efforts:

  • We advertise in the Albuquerque Journal, Venue each First Friday and in the main body of the paper the following Thursday of each month.

  • We are members of the Albuquerque Art Business Association, and we created new rack cards to place at various retail locations. If you are interested in helping the gallery to get the word out, stop by and pick up a few cards.

  • We have a new neon sign in our front window to help our customers find our location!

  • We also advertise through the various free community sites, so you may see ads for our upcoming events through one of these formats. You can also get updates by signing up to be a subscriber.

  • We're advertising in Southwest Contemporary and the ARTScrawl publications to name a couple of recent ads.

  • And, we post on social media: Facebook and Instagram. Please share our posts to spread the word about our gallery.

The Gallery ABQ is honored to have "Keeping it Real: The Traveling Road Show" of George (Hauie) Hayes, III, and Patrick Carr in the Salon during the month of September. Their show will feature both artists in their own unique styles. They will be onsite for the opening reception to share processes and witty stories and to meet their fans. The reception is Friday, September 2nd, 5-8 pm.

Our Featured Artists in September are Sandra Baca, (jewelry) and Nancy Schrock, (pastels/colored pencils). Sandy became interested in beads in the mid-80’s. Her love of precious stones, glass, amber, and antique and ethnic pieces inspire her distinctive bold creations. Nancy is inspired by a quote for her life and creative designs: “The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live,” Flora Whittemore. Her creations are strong, but tranquil and peaceful renditions in pastel and pencil. Both artists will be at the gallery during the artist reception to meet with our valued collectors.

Call for Artists: If you are a local artist looking for a Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery to show your art, go to our website (link below) to get more information about our gallery. The application is online.  If you are interested, please send in your application and we can set up a jury date.

Keeping It Real: The Traveling Road Show

The Gallery ABQ Featured Artists for September are

Sandra Baca and Nancy Schrock

Featured Artist

Sandra Baca

(jewelry)

by Linda Weiss

Sandra (Sandy) Baca was born and raised in Albuquerque. She is one of the Featured Artists at The Gallery ABQ First Friday reception (sponsored by Tractor Brewing Westside) on September 2, 2022, from 5 - 8:00pm. Sandy was one of the founders of The Gallery ABQ and has been providing beautiful  jewelry  for many years.

Originally a fine arts student, Sandy trained in a number of disciplines including ceramics, weaving, photography, jewelry design, and art history. She received her art and education degrees from UNM and then taught art in APS for 30 years. Sandy became interested in beads in the mid 80's. The beauty, historical, and cultural importance evoked such a love for beads that she has been working and designing with them ever since, particularly utilizing semi-precious stones, glass, amber, antique pieces, and ethnic pieces.

Sandy's bold creations in bead design are truly distinctive art. She remains passionate about creating and recognizes wearable art as the first form of artistic expression. The most beautiful aspect of any wearable art is the personal made public. Her concept of jewelry as personal expression and fashion adornment has remained her strength and signature.

Come see Sandy and her wearable art on September 2, 2022, from 5-8 pm.  Listen to her explain her jewelry, while sipping on a beverage supplied by Tractor Brewing Westside.  What a fun evening.

Featured Artist

Nancy J. Schrock

(pastel and pencil)

by Linda Weiss

Nancy J. Schrock is one of the Featured Artists at The Gallery ABQ First Friday reception on September 2, 2022, from 5-8:00 pm. This reception will be sponsored by Tractor Brewing Westside, promising a fun night out for all!

Nancy, who moved to Albuquerque in 2019 from Pensacola, Florida, and before that, Lake Jackson, Texas, has a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois, and an M.A. in English (creative writing) from the University of West Florida. She teaches online classes for the University of West Florida in chemistry and writing for science majors. She has published a speculative fiction novel, Incense Rising, as well as work in other genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Nancy is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, the Pastel Society of New Mexico, the American Chemical Society, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, and the Daughters of the King.

Nancy began painting in the 1980’s with oils, and then took a 10-year family hiatus. In 2002, while living in Midland, Michigan, she discovered painting with colored pencil, and has continued with that medium for the last 20 years. Although she enjoys pencils, she sometimes finds the process to be slow, so about four years ago, she started working with pastels and now uses both media (but not on the same piece). She is inspired by art that reveals something that is underlying or hidden. For example, she is fascinated by light coming through flowers, windows, or a bottle. She says that her work tends to reflect her personality—deliberate, planned-out, and thoughtful.

Come meet Nancy on September 2 and learn more about pastel and pencil directly from the artist herself, while enjoying beverages from Tractor Brewing Westside, crudités, and sweets. Learning about art can be a blast!

Card Racks Updated

Meg Munro recently gave our card racks a face lift! Cards are popular sellers at the gallery because they are affordable, small pieces of art, and buyers are contributing to the local market rather than Hallmark or a similar supplier.

A card from one of our new artists, Dana Millen, is shown in the photo, Sunflowers for Ukraine.
