BESA Student Seminar Series 

Monday, Jan. 6, 12-1 p.m. in GBSF 2202

BESA invites you to attend our upcoming Student Seminar Series for a QE practice talk by Brent Weyers, titled "Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging for Intraoperative Tumor Delineation in Oral Cavity and Oropharyngeal Cancer Procedures." All are welcome, whether you would like to give critical feedback or just stop by to see what the QE is all about. 

 

BESA QE Peer Advice Workshop

Thursday, Jan. 9, 10-11 a.m. in GBSF 1005

Preparing for the QE can be daunting and BESA wants to support you because we know you can do it. Please join us for a casual workshop on QE Peer Advice right after seminar in the GBSF auditorium. The workshop will be geared toward 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students but all are welcome. Bring your uncertainties and questions and we hope to give you more confidence moving forward. 

 

BESA Mental Health Meeting 

Friday, Jan. 10, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in GBSF 1202C

Join the BESA Mental Health team at our first meeting this Friday. We'll be planning for a Winter Quarter event and devising a strategy to get the book club started. 

 

BESA Outreach Opportunities

  • BMES Make-a-thon, Jan. 17-19: The undergraduate student group (BMES) is looking for mentors for their annual Medical Make-a-Thon in which 15 teams of 5 are presented with a clinical problem and have 48 hours to design, prototype, and possibly test their medical devices. If you're interested in helping, please contact Anirudh Devathi Rajan or Shilpi Kalra.

Since 2016, Science Café events, supported by the CTSC’s Community Engagement Program, have provided a forum for researchers and community members to share knowledge on community-relevant health issues and cutting-edge science. This event is open to all with free admission and light refreshments.

 

UC Davis 2nd Annual Research Quality and Design Symposium

Thursday, Jan. 23 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

This year's symposium will focus on research design, analysis, and ethics challenges in clinical translation. Come hear distinguished speakers discuss things such as, "When clinical trials are marketing masquerading as science," "Improving how we present aggregated data in research reports," "Non-inferiority studies: unmasking the ethical issues," and "Why precision oncology is not very precise."

Announcements and Awards

 

Congratulations to Amy Becker on being selected into the Science Translators Showcase for the California Council on Science & Technology! Amy is among 15 other early career scientists from across California who will get a chance to explain their research to legislative staffers, agency managers, and senior policy leaders during a networking event at the California State Capitol in February. See the story on last year's showcase here for a summary.

 

Congratulations to Dr. John M. Boone on receiving the Butterfly Award from the Image Gently Alliance. The Image Gently Alliance includes participation from more than 100 scientific societies and 64,000 pledgees, with a focus on delivering lower radiation dose levels in CT and other medical imaging procedures to pediatric patients. The Butterfly Award is the only award given annually by the Alliance, and was recently awarded to Dr. Boone in recognition of his leadership in the development of a radiation dose metric, the size-specific dose estimate (SSDE), which provides a more accurate estimate of radiation dose in CT procedures for smaller patients. Congratulations to Dr. Boone on this accomplishment! 

 

Congratulations to Dr. Richard Levenson on being elected as an SPIE Fellow. Each year, SPIE – the international society for optics and photonics – selects members of distinction who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in optics, photonics, and imaging, as new Fellows. Congratulations to Dr. Levenson on being honored for his technical achievements and his service to the general optics community and to SPIE in particular! 

 

Graduate students can now contribute to IRAs with non-W-2 income! Legislation has recently been passed that allows graduate students to contribute fellowship income to IRAs. A podcast and post with more information can be found here. 

 

Fellowships and funding opportunities

College of Engineering Safety Culture Committee 

Dean Curtis, the Dean of the College of Engineering, is seeking a graduate student from BME who would like to be involved in a newly forming Safety Culture committee. The purpose of this committee is to meet monthly with Jonathan Klane, Director of Strategic Change in Safety Culture & Programs, to accomplish the following:

  • Discuss the results of an upcoming survey about safety that will be delivered to every department in the CoE
  • Determine highest risk areas from the survey and brainstorm ways to positively address concerns
  • Disseminate information generated by the committee to the department/graduate group
  • Overall, determine ways to best engage graduate students to embrace a culture of safety, rather than compliance

      The newly formed BESA Health group hosted a movie night last month to help students de-stress during finals and before the holidays. BESA students snacked on popcorn and cookies while enjoying Home Alone. Be on the lookout for more fun BESA Health events this year! 

      December Student/Faculty Lunch

      Last month's student/faculty lunch featured a fun and informative seminar on "Microscopy: Getting More Information With Less Work" by Dr. Richard Levenson. Following the seminar, students and faculty enjoyed a lunch from ChickPeas Kitchen while playing a round of trivia.
