Nuclear Energy Makes History at COP28 |
|
|
United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) agreement solidified a landmark deal to 'transition away' from fossil fuels. Nuclear energy etched its place in history as COP28 concluded in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In a remarkable move, the 198 signatory countries to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change officially endorsed the acceleration of low-emission technologies, including nuclear energy, for rapid decarbonization. This historic development emerged in the 28th paragraph of the Global Stocktake, a comprehensive assessment of the world's progress toward the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The call for nuclear energy's contribution, coupled with the commitment of 25 countries to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050, signifies a significant momentum shift towards clean and reliable energy sources. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed, “Nuclear energy‘s inclusion in the Global Stocktake is nothing short of a historic milestone and a reflection of how much perspectives have changed.” |
