Exhibition and Projects Updates

BY ARTIST KARLA GARCIA

I hope you are well and staying out of the Texas heat wave! I have been quite busy this summer with different projects and exhibitions that are rolling out beautifully this summer. To start, make sure you stop by at 12.26 Gallery in Dallas, Texas, to view the group exhibition "The Range". This beautifully co-curated show by galleries 12.26 and The Valley Taos shares paintings and sculptures by 11 artists from across the U.S. In this exhibition we imagine, challenge, and re-contextualize the idea of the Cowboy and the Western landscape. Make sure you stop by!

Earlier in May, I joined the Dallas Aurora team to create an artwork for their annual event "Art Quest." Artists Eliza Au, Hobbes Vincent and I were invited to create a sculpture using 3D technology. It was a challenge, and I am so excited about the result. I typically use clay as my medium, and this project took me out of my comfort level for a bit. I scanned a ceramic sculpture, digitally manipulated it, printed the new design in resin, and made a low-fired terra cotta base. The resulting sculpture was hidden in Pleasant Grove in South Dallas, and the public was invited to find it in a scavenger hunt-style event. Congratulations to the winner! I'm proud to bring art to the community and contribute to the Dallas Aurora art and technology events.

For the last six months, it was my honor to exhibit my project La Línea Imaginaria at the Soy de Tejas: a survey exhibition in San Antonio, Texas. Curated by Rigoberto Luna, 40 Latinx artists displayed their work at Centro de Artes with important and challenging themes about identity, place, politics, myths, and history. If you haven't seen it, there are only a few days left to visit. See our work before it closes on July 2nd.

Upcoming:

  • Materiality in Dialogue, a group exhibition curated by Varuni K.
    in Victoria, Australia.

  • Workshop at the Kimbell Art Museum

  • Public Art Sculpture at Trail Divers Park is scheduled to be
    installed later this summer!

  • La Tierra Devora El Muro // The Land Swallows the Wall is in its
early stages and we have long way to go. I am excited to be
working with author and poet mónica teresa ortiz as co-editor.
We have a growing number of artists and writers contributing to
this book, and we cannot wait to get this project off the ground.

  • Solo exhibition for the Cell Series at the Old Jail Art Center, a
    museum in Albany, Texas.

Stay tuned. I will share more information on my next update!
