Rolling and Unrolling

Floor Rugs

During the beginning weeks of school, students learn how their environment works. One skill required in the Montessori classroom is how to roll and unroll a floor rug. These rugs are used throughout the classroom to work on activities known as "floor works".

The Montessori Daoshi blog does a great job explaining the importance of this skill in their blog!

What do Montessorians wish Parents would know about Montessori?

Montessori education allows children to develop at their own pace and achieve great academic and personal success.

Montessori fundamentals carry on with the child through out his/her life.

Montessori is not free-for-all do-as-you-please, or rigid, but it is walking a fine line between. Many parents today do not understand what freedom within boundaries means. They often allow freedom, but no boundaries.

A simple home environment is ideal with just a few items to work with on each of their shelves and everything else stored. Cleanliness, caring for their toys and for their home are all things they can and should be doing with their parents.

Grace and courtesy includes just manners, but also the way they dress, the way they care for their body, hair, clothes, books, puzzles, etc.

Family dinners are important and ideally will resemble the Montessori class lunches - waiting for everyone to be served, staying at the table for others to be finished, etc.

Oftentimes, parents do not understand that those simple things that allow their children to live in a peaceful environment can help with their concentration skills, help them academically, and keeps them healthy, both mentally and physically.

Here are a few Montessori terms defined to help parents understand the classroom goals:

(click each term for a definition)

  1. Normalized child
  2. Freedom within boundaries
  3. Uninterrupted work period
  4. Sensorial periods
