We have some new information sessions scheduled, but please watch the website or our Facebook page for date/time changes, as they may be rescheduled depending on the COVID-19 situation. We had information tables planned for Covent Garden Market, and  Go Wild, Grow Wild but those events are pending new dates. We hope everyone is keeping well!

Spokane's first co-housing community sold out before groundbreaking

SPOKANE, Wash. - Tucked into a lower South Hill neighborhood, and overlooking downtown Spokane, is an oasis of open land covered in fruit trees and blooming flowers. It's a rare undeveloped three acres just miles from the center of the city. Construction will start on the land in April, but not for a typical subdivision or apartment complex.

This is not your average condominium complex, inside or out. Exterior angles and asymmetry are the shell for diverse apartment units, exercise rooms in stairwells, lounges within hallways, and a large open-concept kitchen and dining room. In that latter space on Wednesday evening, about a dozen people gathered around two pushed-together tables.

What is cohousing? Cohousing communities are communities organised collaboratively. Residents have their own private spaces but band together to share meals and facilities, organise activities and look out for each other. The focus is on community. All that's required is a neighbourhood where people want to band together, take care of one another and collaborate for the good of all.

In addition to a solar array and geothermal heating/cooling, all lumber and flooring for the building were chosen for sustainability and the walls were built with extra insulation. Light pipes (similar to skylights) brighten the upper floors.
