Te Ara Teatea Panui

September 2024

Kia ora e te whanau! Welcome to our first ever newsletter!

At Te Ara Teatea we were riding the ebbs and flows this Takurua Winter. We have had beautiful waananga and connections over Matariki and we have also weathered personal days of whiro and inward reflections for the future. Sometimes holding fast in the turbulent waters can feel really hard and overwhelming until the calm waters of karamu flow again.

We know times are and have been challenging for many, so we honour you all as we now have the spring tides carrying forth renewed energies budding inside of all of us and reflected externally on our Papatuuaanuku.

What’s Been Happening

We held a sacred 10 night journey in the beautiful Te Tai o Aorere, Tasman region. This winter we enjoyed two of these sacred journeys into the 3 hearts, one in May and one in July.

We mihi and acknowledge those who heard the calling to attend. These are intimate and life changing waananga for attendees. We were honoured to have whanau from Australia brave the southern winter and travel to their ancestral lands of Te Wai Pounamu connecting deeper into their Kai Tahu links. As well as those who travelled from all over Aotearoa. We were held deeply by the lands and beautiful whare and as always the waananga…

Inspired by the waa?

If anyone who attended either the recent or past waananga was inspired to share any poems/whakatauki / insights / song lyrics / drawings or musings please feel free to email them to whitiwhiti@tearateatea.com.

This is going to become a space where our community can share your inspirations from waananga and we aim to publish a pukapuka at the end of the year. (with any profits going towards waananga scholarships).

We will also share snippets on our social media pages (which currently we know are not really happening lol) but hey if anyone wants to volunteer their time to social media please get in touch :)

LEVEL 1 INTRO TO PHILOSOPHIES

Ōtautahi/Christchurch

We will be holding a Level 1 Waananga again in October at our Whare Hauora in Ōtautahi/Christchurch.

This Level 1 Waananga introduces the philosophies and practices of Whare Wānanga Lore and Traditional Māori Healing.

Level 1 Waananga is about establishing a solid foundation in order to safely enter the tapu realms of healing. It will provide you with tools to understand, navigate and stimulate your own spiritual growth and awareness, not only within the mahi of romiromi/mirimiri, but also within your everyday life.

The philosophies are taught in both reo Māori and English and this waananga will cover:

- Dynamics of karakia, takutaku and kaupare

- Awareness and importance of self-reflection and healing

- A basic romiromi (bodywork) alignment

After attending this Waananga you will have the opportunity to continue to build your skills and confidence through ongoing weekly training in our Community Clinic held on Wednesday evenings.

This waananga is across 2 days, starting at 10am & finishing at approximately 5pm-6pm daily.

RONGOAA

AA TAU

Arahura Marae, Hokitika

We are so excited for this one! Bringing together two of Aotearoa’s leading Rongoaa Māori Leaders together for the first time for a unique and powerful Waananga. Donna Kerridge and Ruatau Perez will be sharing their Mātauranga that has not been delivered in this way before.

We will delve deep, to rekindle cultural connections to the land and each other. We invite you to walk this journey with us through the ancient practice and philosophy of Rongoaa Māori, the oldest healing practices of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Gathering on the ancestral lands of Ngati Waewae on Arahura Marae in Hokitika on the West Coast of South Island.

Not only will this waananga give a balanced and unique perspective to Rongoaa. It will include a Pōwhiri from Mana Whenua onto Arahura Marae, plant identifications and plant use with Donna. We will delve into the wairua aspects, activating a deeper spiritual connection to this mahi with Ruatau. Allowing space for the waananga to flow and shape itself depending on attendees energy and interests.

Connecting into the lands and the ancestors to deepen the practice of current and training Rongoaa Māori practitioners. This wananga will include 3 nights and 4 days on the marae, with all meals included during this event.

Whare Hauora

Our Whare Hauora is in full swing and the heat pumps have been blasting on these chilly Ōtautahi mornings. We are working on our fourth treatment room as we speak and hope to have that up and running soon.

ACC: Our ACC waitlist is still ongoing and we appreciate everyone's patience. Our commitment is to continue to train safe, grounded and highly capable Kaimiri still at the forefront and which is why those that have appointments with Ruatau may have a shadow/training person in their session.

Cancellations: Please whanau, give as much notice as possible if you cannot attend your Rongoaa appointment, so our tangata Manaaki can fill this space asap. We do not get paid if you do not show up, so it does have an effect on our own whanau. We appreciate your support with this.

Oriori: Our Haputanga programme is still going. This provides free Haputanaga and postpartum support for Mama under 29. If you or friend/whanau may benefit please connect with us at oriori@tearateatea.com - https://www.tearateatea.com/haputanga

We would like to acknowledge the Rata Foundation for supporting this valuable mahi.

HONOURING RAWINIA

Lastly we take this moment to honour our most wonderful friend and student of the waananga Rawinia Puna. Many of you who met Rawinia will know this hearty mana wahine, with her quiet but strong presence. She dedicated her life to being a kaitiaki for Papatuuaanuku, her whanau and those she considered whanau.

She applied the waananaga daily, especially diving deep into Nga Rongomau and the Māori world view of Quantum Physics was her passion. We haven't heard of anyone else tattooing all the IO up their spine! 08.08.2024 Rawinia passed peacefully at home surrounded by her children whom adored her and the Te Ara Teatea whanau were privileged to support whaea on her journey and spend time with her on her final evening to hold and clear the space and for her wairua to join her Tiipuna amongst the stars.

Kua haere ia ki tōna moenga roa.

"Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi."

"As the old net withers, the new net appears."

This whakatauki can speak to the idea that as the old or previous season (winter) passes, new opportunities or periods (spring) emerge. It reflects the natural cycle of renewal and the transition from one phase to another.

We hope you have all had a smooth transition of seasons.
