Newsletter December 18, 2023 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

The Torah portion for Hanukkah is always the same, no matter when in the secular calendar it appears. The Festival of Lights always coincides with Parashat Miketz. And what is in this Torah portion?

It begins with our patriarch Joseph who is, up until now, an inmate in Egypt. But, through a series of events, he has found his way to Pharaoh who is seeking his ability to interpret dreams. When Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dreams with skill and acumen, Pharaoh not only agrees to release Joseph from jail, but also to then make him leader of the land.

The rabbis marvel at this development. And as I wrote about it in the CCAR-published book, Prophetic Voices, they recognized the unlocking of Joseph's body from bondage as a moment of an unlocking of Joseph's light. Unlocking him from bondage allowed him to benefit the entire people with his light.

The Sages of old go even further and recognize this same date, which they describe as a "light filled day," as also the dates when the Israelites went down to Egypt to escape the threat of famine, and then again were freed from bondage from Egypt.

They are connecting the idea that light that can be unlocked when individuals and even an entire people is given the love and support they need to self-actualize. When people are freed from famine, and from bondage, their light is unlocked.

On a holiday where we kindle candles to marvel at the light shining bright, particularly during the dark winter months, this message is most appreciated. We all benefit from more light in the world. And, we are encouraged to increase the light.

Through the ritual of lighting the menorah for eight nights, we realize that every day is an opportunity to help someone unlock their light. To share their goodness and glow with the world.

Many of us may be participating in community service or charity in the world at this end of year. There are so many places that would benefit from help unlocking light. Whose light will you choose to help to unlock?

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

DA PRESS CONFERENCE ON ANTISEMITISM

Tuesday, Los Angeles DA George Gascon announced charges of hate crimes against two separate men in separate incidents. Our Rabbi Miller was invited, as Founding Member of the Los Angeles DA's Interfaith Advisory Council, to speak on the matter. Here are her remarks:

"Many thanks to DA Gascon for inviting me here today to bear sacred witness to the announcement of these charges. I applaud his work, and that of his office, in their tireless efforts to bring about a focused consideration of the horrendous facts of these cases.

Facts that strike a chord of fear in the hearts of every Jewish person. Swastikas on sacred sanctuaries, reminiscent of the horrors of the Nazis—a regime that many of our families have personal history with. Physical violence, rooted in antisemitism, a hatred that every Jew contends with, meant to intimidate, and ignite fear.

I can’t help but feel the echoes of the Hanukkah story of two thousand years ago that the Jewish community is remembering this week: A story of the sacred temple that was defiled. When Jews were persecuted and bloodied for being Jewish. But back then, the Jewish people found a way back into sacred spaces, and into safety, so that we were able to once again light our menorah.

And, today, you have lit the light of justice on these cases, to allow our sacred spaces to be rededicated; a light of justice that will help inspire hope for the well-being of our people. And for that of others. Because for those of us in the interfaith, multiethnic spaces of Los Angeles, we know that when one of us is threatened, all of us are threatened. Especially with symbols like the swastika which targeted Jews and also members of communities of color, the disabled, and members of the LGBTQIA community, as well.

Especially during this time of rising hatred, as we coalesce for goodness and out of concern for the well-being of one another, your work for justice is appreciated and applauded. Thank you for your leadership."

Thank you to DA Gascon and the entire office. To view coverage of the press conference, see KTLA's coverage HERE and the DA's full recording HERE.

HANUKKAH REPRISE: A GLOWING SUCCESS!

One of the best traditions humanity has observed for millennia is that of gathering around a fire under the stars to sing and tell stories, and to hold space for each other’s fear and pain but also ideas, gratitude, light and hope. This past Shabbat, the Keeping It Sacred community did just that- telling Hanukkah stories of goblins and challenge and freedom and joy and love. An evening of connection and curiosity, creativity, and community. This was our last Shabbat program of 2023 - we are headed into a new year lifted by one another. Please consider signing up for our newsletter - we would love to gather with you in the new year. May it be a year of goodness.

And check out this animated (to preserve the anonymity of our members) version of our gathering HERE. It was electric!

SHARED SOCIETY

A HUGE Todah Rabah/Thank You to Rabbi Leora Ezrachi-vered for her sharing her sacred work building a shared society in the Jezreel Valley through Niggun HaLev, bringing together members of the Jewish, Druze, Muslim, Bedouin, and Christian communities (clergy and lay people) to keep a heart-centered approach to the situation. Your interfaith, multiethnic grief groups, care groups, prayer groups and more are building the model of a shared society-- a light of inspiration to our hearts around the world.

Everyone, please check out this amazing community via Facebook Here: https://www.facebook.com/nigunhalev

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

JOIN our healing circle holding space for all looking for prayers for healing. This and EVERY THURSDAY -- at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET.

Immediately following that: at 11am PT/2pm ET, join us as we jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old. We enjoy studying a page of Talmud every day and reviewing together every Thursday, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along. We enjoy participation from participants across at at least 38 states and 12 countries across who span the spectrum of race, gender, class, age, and connection to Jewish thought.

The rabbis could never have imagined such a wonderful group considering their thoughts!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

To join and of these gatherings, please register HERE. Also, DM Rabbi Miller on Facebook HERE to be added to the closed, secret group where we question and discuss. And look for us on Instagram daily HERE.

COPING FOR KIDS AT BEEWELL.COM

Kids who learn coping skills are better prepared for the difficulties that face them.

This is the founding principle that KITS community member Terra Horton, MA, LMFT, and her sister Tracey Horton Gronemeyer, used to create a unique line of books for kids going through tough times like life-threatening illness, injury, and painful medical interventions can lead to trauma symptoms, including PTSD.

They saw the need for children to get mental and emotional care, alongside the medical care already getting in hospitals, because mental health matters.

They started their work in hospitals, and grew to include other places kids need support too, including going to sleep away camps, entering foster care, learning how to protect themselves, and more.

We wanted you to know about these resources and this amazing dynamic duo as Keeping It Sacred is a community of writers and healers. Enjoy HERE.
