St. Cloud Documentary Screening Recap, Upcoming Screening Oct. 11 at Casa Feliz

The screening of the documentary "Two Women and the Pavilion in the Water" about two women in architecture far ahead of their time was a great success in St. Cloud this past weekend. Thank you to OFA Events Chair and major contributor to this documentary Gregory Stock, AIA CDT LEED BD+C for lending his time and extensive knowledge at the event and to Grace Arts Center for producing this incredible film & the Florida Division of Historical Resources for the grants that made it possible.

The next screening will take place at historic Casa Feliz as part of their ongoing Parlor Series on October 11th. The Parlor Series focuses on programs that support the mission of the Friends of Casa Feliz which includes preserving and promoting our community's rich architectural, historic and cultural heritage. Creating awareness of these two pioneering architects (Isabel Roberts & Ida Ryan) certainly does just that. Film contributers Gregory Stock, AIA CDT LEED BD+C and Reverend Dr. John A. Dalles will talk about Roberts and Ryan to supplement the showing of the film.

FREE admission, RSVP by email to rsvp@casafeliz.us or call (407) 628-8200.

The 1968 Orlando Chamber of Commerce Building

We want to let our readers know of the potential demolition of the 1968 Orlando Chamber of Commerce building on Lake Ivanhoe. The structure will possibly soon be replaced by a new Orlando Holocaust Museum by Beyer Blinder Belle: Orlando's Holocaust museum is getting a huge expansion - Jewish Telegraphic Agency (jta.org)

We think the whole architecture community is probably disheartened by the news. And an outstanding example of Nils M. Schweizer’s mature style will be sorely missed. We have created a page on the OFApedia collection to feature this building and remember it. Read about the building here.

If anyone would like to send us additional photos of the building and its beautiful details, we would love to add them to the page.

Artist Spotlight: Meet Cindy Meadows—urban planner turned abstract artist.

Cindy Meadows has always had a keen eye for form, color, texture, and space. After 20 years in the corporate workplace as an urban planner, Cindy retired and followed her heart to create art full-time from her studios in Orlando and Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. She has entered several pieces in this year’s OFA Art Show. Here’s her story of creativity coming full circle.

'Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by a talented family. My father, Edward Lee Meadows, Sr., was an Architect whose career started in an office in Granada Court in Winter Park, FL in the early 50’s. His work included many of the small mid-century modern homes on Corrine Drive and Temple Drive. My father designed homes, churches, hospitals and even a clinic in Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

I visited my father’s office regularly and sometimes he brought drawings home. I guess it was in the genes because I started drawing at around age 8 using his tracing paper, T-squares, triangles, rulers, pencils, lettering sets and many other instruments used back in the pre-computer age. I began illustrating scrapbooks in high school, all in pencil on paper...' Continue reading the full blog article here.

Melanie Crownover, OFA Events Committee Member and fellow artist, interviewed Cindy for the second Artist Spotlight promoting the upcoming 4th Annual Art Show.
