The stripes on the tallit are broad. They stretch across the entirety of the prayer shawl with no clear beginning, and no clear ending. When there are stripes on the tallit, they remind us of the Eternal nature of the Divine.

In fact, my favorite translation for God's name is The Eternal. Why? Because the four letters that spell God's name, known as the tetragrammaton, can be read as a mash up of the Hebrew words for past/present/future. At once, through this name, we experience God as both singular and also expansive beyond all boundaries.

This past weekend, I officiated a Mexican/Jewish wedding and in addition to wrapping the couple in the tallit, we also wrapped them in a lasso twisted in the center symbolizing the symbol for infinity. This ritual is called "El Lazo." Wrappings highlighted the eternal bond the couple was creating.

Eternity is a long time. And it boggles the mind to contemplate time before the Beginning, and time after the End. We shrink in the face of the great expanse.

Why am I highlighting the concept of the Eternal here? Because, this week, in the ritual counting of the Omer, we are contemplating the nature of the eternal/netzach. What is truly unbound by time? What is transcendent? What is lasting?

By considering this question, we might come to focus our attentions on promoting the things that are most lasting-- namely honor, respect, and love.

Together, we're contemplating these grand concepts.
Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

Join us for Torah of the Heart! Our newest teachings by guest Rabbis every other Monday in May and June. May 16, Rabbi Jill Cozen Harel teaches Making Liturgical Love Tangible.

What roles can liturgical texts and rituals play in bringing meaning to our daily lives? How might they encourage deeper connection to God and also reach into doubt and struggles with God? In this program, Rabbi Cozen Harel will share reflections on her experience of the ritual of wearing tefillin and utilizing other physical ritual elements over many years.

Rabbi Jill Cozen-Harel is a San Francisco-based rabbi whose work spans the denominational spectrum. She enjoys running the occasional half-marathon, and gravitates to the fields of education, bioethics, chaplaincy, and healthcare. All are welcome!

She was very involved in our programs and in the midst of immersing herself in the study of Judaism and practices. We uplift her loving memory by naming this program in honor of her love of exploring Jewish life through the KITS community programming.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
