Is Benzene in Your Sunscreen? Benzene, which has been linked to blood cancers, has been reported in a large number of sunscreens and after-sun products that were independently tested. The products included sprays, gels, lotions, and creams. Benzene was found in 43 out of 224 sunscreens and in 8 of 48 after-sun products. FDA guidance suggests that no level of benzene is safe, and it is not permitted in these or other products. |

Last June, the Harvard School of Public Health published a paper in the British Medical Journal (BMJ is a highly reputable journal) on the “Green” Mediterranean Diet- definitely impressive with the health benefits mentioned (no big surprise). I recommend googling this to get more details. The biggest differences between the “regular” Mediterranean diet and the Green version are the following: - More plant proteins are recommended ( especially Mankai- if you are like me you are probably thinking what on earth is this? Well, it is the the smallest vegetable in the world) and they replace the small amount of red meat that is included with the regular Mediterranean Diet
- “Green” term also refers to choosing ethically and sustainably raised, organic, and or wild meats, fish, poultry dairy and eggs.
- Walnuts, green tea, and plant protein (Mankai, tempeh, legumes)are daily staples
- Overall the menu consists of lower complex carbohydrate and more protein than the traditional Mediterranean diet.
With so many trends and different eating styles being promoted it may be confusing and frustrating to know what advice to follow. Paleo? Keto? Flexitarian? Mediterranean? Green Mediterranean? Nutritarian? It really does not have to be complicated for most people. Choose good QUALITY- fresh as possible, organic as possible, sustainable and ethically sourced as possible- we need to get back to the basics - cooking at home- smelling the food that we prepare- enjoy preparing, enjoy eating- put love and passion into it. Eat with family/friends- the social aspect is important as well. After a few decades of working in the medical field, I do recognize that there are those who require more of a specific nutritional protocol and who need more of an investigative and personalized approach in order to offer proper nutritional guidance. It is so exciting today because there are superb laboratories offering well researched tests that can help with this and you don’t have to sell your home to afford it : ) Dr.Brkich is skilled at navigating which laboratory tests would be best suited to meed the needs of his patients. -Anne Deni B.Sc.
