Happy Fall! 🍂

Even though we just had a heat wave here in Northern California this past weekend, fall is officially here.

What does fall mean to you? Do you love to curl up at home with a hot cup of tea and a good book as the weather starts to cool and the days give way to night earlier? Or do you seek more time in nature to soak up the vibrant colors of the season and its earthy smells? Maybe both?

For me, this time of year always brings with it more introspection and reflection. It blows my mind that yet another year is beginning to wind down. I look back on all that's transpired in the last nine and a half months and spend time thinking about what else I wish to accomplish before the year comes to a close—be it in action items or in personal growth.

One of my goals for the months ahead is to recommit myself to being as intentional as possible not only in my communication with others, but in my self-talk and the thoughts I allow to occupy my mind space. I'm generally pretty intentional with my words, but I've noticed recently that I could re-up my game in both my internal and external dialogue.

Is there anything you intend to give some extra attention to for the rest of 2023?

A time to nourish your body and soul

As summer turns to fall and we move towards winter, our yin (inward, contracting) energy waxes, and our yang (outward, expansive) energy wanes. This is a time to focus on nourishment for body, mind, and spirit to replenish our stores for winter. While we can get away with cold and raw foods during the hot months of summer, our bodies prefer warm and cooked foods as the outside temperature drops. Hearty soups and stews are perfect for this time of year!

Personally, this is also a time of year when I'm more frequently drawn to my journal—whether it's to document some of my favorite memories from summer that I'll enjoy revisiting in years to come, or simply to let myself write out the questions that are churning in my mind. Questions about life, love, God, the Universe, the world... the tangible, and the intangible. Though I may not necessarily uncover concrete answers, I find that the process of letting my thoughts flow through my pen onto the paper provides some peace of mind. It also reminds me of how much I have to be grateful for and helps me shift my perspective where it may have been stuck.

Give your body some extra love

This time of year seems to test our immune systems a little extra as not only the weather changes, but we have to adjust our pace of life to one that may not be in alignment with our natural rhythm. Our bodies want to slow down and retreat as we move from summer's more expansive, fiery energy into the contracting energy of Metal, but we are often called on to keep going at a rapid pace. This creates internal tension, which we experience as stress.

The organ systems associated with the Metal element are the Lungs and Large Intestine. The Lungs open into the sinuses and are prone to dryness. They're also the receptacle where excess mucus is stored. Not surprising that the sniffles and chest colds are common in the fall.

Some of my favorite go-tos at the first sign of an overtaxed immune system are elderberry syrup, colloidal silver, lots of fluids to flush out toxins, and increasing my vitamin C and D intake.

It's also a great time to see your acupuncturist or chiropractor to help support your immune system.
