National Environmental Policy Act |
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was established in 1969. Prior to NEPA’s inception, no legal mechanism for environmental review was in place in the international community at large. Its integration into U.S. domestic policy provided essential opportunities for input from frontline community members on projects that might pose environmental impacts or risks to them. Other countries around the world took note and followed suit, and NEPA has earned the moniker the "Magna Carta of environmental law." You can read more about its history and impacts here. |
Unfortunately, the protections offered by NEPA were weakened by the previous administration. Now, the Biden Administration has issued a proposal to reverse harmful changes and strengthen NEPA. |
Please take 5 minutes to send in a letter of support today for the new proposal. Public comments must be received by tomorrow, Friday, September 29. The Union of Concerned Scientists has provided a script (you can adjust it and add your personal comments as you like) and an email form at this link. |

Dekalb Green New Deal Update |
Wow! Dekalb County Commissioner Ted Terry is really working hard to simultaneously address the effects of climate change on the county while creating new jobs through renewable energy, energy efficiency, and green infrastructure. He needs constituent support and input, and this is an exciting moment to get involved. The free event below is an awesome opportunity to learn more from environmental leaders, meet new people, and take a fun and interesting field trip on an electric MARTA bus! |

Want to get even more involved and make a bigger impact? There will be a total of 5 community engagement sessions (including the summit) as Southface Institute helps Dekalb County to develop a countywide Clean Energy and Clean Transportation Plan. Southface Institute is recruiting a cohort of Community Climate Champions to attend all five sessions. The goal is to educate and empower participants to act at the individual, community, and state levels for the benefit of their community. These sessions will continue into 2024 and are still being organized. To indicate your interest in and to stay up to date please email your interest to dekalbcleanenergy@southface.org and visit www.cleanenergydekalb.com for more details. |
