For the second time, the publishers of Our State magazine have commissioned me to paint 35 illustrations for a new book written by their editor-in-chief, Elizabeth Hudson. This book, which will be published sometime in October 2022, is a follow-up to Silver Linings, which I illustrated in 2019. The new book will be entitled You Make My Heart Sing and, like Silver Linings, will contain 35 of Elizabeth's columns with a corresponding watercolor illustration for each. Once published, copies will be available from the Our State Store. You can also still purchase copies of Silver Linings right now. If you've spoken with me over this summer, you know that this project took over my life for a couple of months! It was my primary focus and I was working on my illustrations day and night to get them completed by the deadline last week. Despite the workload, the project was fun and now I'm proud of the work I created. Can't wait to see it published! Here are a few of my favorites, starting with the "Carolina Glee Club". |
|
|
Eleven of the illustrations will be full spreads that appear before the corresponding essay, like Carolina Glee Club above. The other 24 are vignettes, which will appear on the page with their corresponding stories, such as the next two pieces, Sunshine Daydream and Places of the Heart, below. |
|
|
All of the You Make My Heart Sing original artwork will become available for sale 3 months after the book's publication. |

Below the Tetons, 14 x 21 1/2" inches, available for purchase directly from me. Contact me for details; this work is not yet framed. This painting, as you might suspect by the name, is from our trip out west last year, when we visited a handful of National Parks, including the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The subject is the Snake River, above and below the waterline, in early morning. As usual, my husband, John, is the one who knew where to go and when; there was no one else in sight. It was stunningly perfect and beautiful that morning, and I did my best to capture it on watercolor paper. Don't know if I could ever truly do it justice, but this might be close. |

More new art... I've done lots of smaller pieces this year, too. Many of the paintings I've done have been with my wonderful students. Here are a few. |

Floyd at High Rock, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, available on Etsy My dad has always called the great blue herons at High Rock Lake (our second home when I was growing up) "Floyd". When I was little, and Dad pointed out that Floyd was on the dock, I thought it was always the same bird, with whom my dad was personally acquainted. What a happy time it is when the world still holds all the possibilities! So this Floyd is looking for a home to stay. You can find him on Etsy if you'd like to make him yours. |

Heron in the Marsh, 11 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches, available on Etsy Speaking of herons, this scene is near Southport, NC. We stopped beside the road to take in a gorgeous view of the marsh and the stealthy fisherbird stalking its next meal. If the heron is too small for you to see here, you can see a bigger image at the Etsy link above. |

Bluebells, 8 x 10 inches, and Daffodils, 8 x 10 inches, both available on Etsy. I can thank one of my students for getting me to paint floral paintings with her! She generously volunteered to donate art to Brushes With Cancer to benefit cancer research and honor a cancer survivor that she was paired with. So we painted together, each creating florals—bluebells, daffodils, and purple coneflowers. We had also done an 8 x 10 of red and pink poppies just prior, and it's also available in my Etsy shop. |

I'm also using a new registration system, so please forgive and inform me of any kinks! laura@lauraposs.com By popular demand, I've come up with several new group series and upcoming workshops from fall through spring. You can learn about and register for them now at lauraposs.com/classes. I'm thrilled to know that we have so many burgeoning and experienced watercolorists in the Greensboro area! I've been getting frequent emails from interested students, and now that I'm done with my Our State illustrations, I'm glad to be able to accommodate new students. Due to this high demand, I urge you to not delay signup if you are someone who has been waiting on me. I'm not currently taking new students for one-on-one lessons, so if you see a group class you might like to join, please keep this in mind. lauraposs.com/classes |

In other news, we went to Alaska this past June to visit John's mom and other family. We had a great time and I can't wait to do some paintings from the trip, now that I have most of my commissions finished for the year. By the way, I still have one painting from our last trip, in 2017, that is looking for a home and you can find it here. I took a big batch of new prints and some framed originals up to Mountain Nest Gallery in Black Mountain, NC a few weeks ago. They've been doing a great job selling my work for a long time now. I love visiting the shop and it seems like I leave with something new every time I go, too! They're really terrific and you should stop by if you're in the Black Mountain (a little east of Asheville, NC) area. They sell online, too. mtnnest.com Thanks so much for tuning in! I wish I was better at getting newsletters out at regular intervals, but until I figure out how to clone myself or get by without sleep, that might not happen. But please know that I appreciate my subscribers so much, especially those of you who have followed and supported me for years. I'd love to hear from you any time. All my very best, Laura |
