Newsletter July 18, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

There are so many memorable songs from the musical Fiddler on the Roof.  "Sunrise... Sunset..." beautifully illustrates the passage of time to the human spirit. If you don't know it, the lyrics are: "Sunrise... Sunset... swiftly fly the years, one season following the other laden with happiness and tears. "

This Thursday, Melissa and I celebrate 10 years of marriage. And, I think about the many sunrises and sunsets we have spent in those years together. A decade of life. Building upon the 9 years we shared before that. Though we have had our ups and downs, we have always focused on the wellness of one another. Through the great waltz of life that spins partners around one another, and in a larger circle along the dance floor, we have centered each other.

Jewish time seeks to center us as well as the earth spins on its tilted axis relative to the sun both in terms of orientation and in terms of orbit. We are a people who counts each new night, we celebrate the return to the sacred day of rest, we praise each new monthly moon, and we observe the holy days that honor a new year. Jewish time seeks to center us to keep our focus on what's actually important, and if done right, Jewish life becomes the stabilizing center even as everything around us spins.

As the official summer season winds down, we find ourselves turning again toward the season of the High Holy Days. These Days of Awe are there to remind us of the importance of focusing on our pivot point-- ourselves and our own behavior.

We return to these holy days, this year especially focusing on our theme, Gathering for Goodness. We check in and reflect-- What kind of goodness is needed in the world today? What is the goodness that I can uniquely offer? Who and what needs to be brought together to make it happen?

Paying attention to our behavior, and infusing it with intention for goodness, according to Jewish tradition, is what should be at the center. Everything else is details.

Please plan to join us this season as we gather for goodness. Details below.

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

Rabbi Heather Miller

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

WEBB TELESCOPE REFLECTIONS

Inspired by THIS article on the Webb Telescope, Rabbi Miller wrote this reflection:

There is a beautiful tradition where, before reciting the time honored prayer known as the Shema, which affirms the Oneness of God, a person would gather up the four corners of their prayer shawl/tallit and cover their eyes to concentrate on the Unity.

For a long time, when I would gather up the four corners on my prayer shawl/tallit, I would think about gathering up my brother, my mom, me and my grandma, in love even when we lived miles apart. By doing this, I felt the bond between us.

As I matured, I expanded my perception to include broader circles of kin, bound together across the four corners of the earth. And indeed our Keeping It Sacred community does span across 6 continents - when I gather up my tallit, I feel connected in a real way.

This article, out of MIT, has me stretching again, and thinking about that great sacred fabric that connects us across the entire universe which is broader in expanse than anyone can comprehend. The threads of connection exist and are felt. That Divine energy is among us.

There are 8 large knots on each corner of the tallit, totaling 32 which is the gematriya / numerology number for the Hebrew word לב״/lev״ meaning “heart.” So, across the four corners of the Universe, among the celestial fabric of creation, the heartbeat of all is found. And with it, profound insight.

Wherever you are, we are together, part of the One.

THIS THURSDAY AND EVERY THURSDAY! Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 31 different states and 9 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.
