Update on the Efforts of C-PAB Melrose Safety Sub-Committee:

Plans are rapidly moving forward to work on multipronged efforts to make Melrose a Safer and Friendlier street to walk, dine and shop on.  According to our new Captain and SLO - Officer Dantzler, we are already seeing decreases in most crimes!  On Monday 8/23 we had about 8 Foot Beat units and 8 Patrol units. Motor units and one VCP Unit providing MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT on Melrose.  This sweep, ordered by our new Captain Monico, was a direct result of the efforts of numerous neighborhood groups and the C-PAB members that make up the sub-committee. The last sub-committee meeting produced information that the committee chair discussed with our Captain.  This helped facilitate the "maximum enforcement" action.

Here's a few more of the efforts being worked on by the subcommittee now:

1) With support from our meetings and our efforts, our Councilmember Koretz is  spearheading a "No Go Zone" for street vendors on Melrose.  Once this motion comes to the full L.A. City Council, we  will need ALL of our readers to write letters in support of this motion. Greg Martayan from Koretz's office couldn't provide a specific date yet, but he said we are "real close to making this happen".

2) Two of the subcommittee members are solely working on the Code Violation issues including contacting the Dept of Health regarding food service violations and failure to wear masks, the Fire Department regarding store overcrowding issues, the DOT regarding illegal parking and anything else that comes to mind as a failure to obey laws and ordinances that are already on the books. These violations just needed someone to act on and make complaints.  Our Sub-Committee members are acting on all of them!

3) Another subcommittee member is working on gathering statistics on E-Scooters.  Specifically how many crimes they are used in and how many times they are used as a weapon.  Along with how many accidents have occurred by riders under the influence.  This information will be used to make a presentation to the councilmember who can write a motion to BAN these from Melrose Village.

4) WE HAVE A POLICE SUBSTATION AVAILABLE FOR LAPD USE NOW!  Another member was able to find a business that agreed to allow our LAPD officers and other security details to use their building and parking for various security and police needs.  We cannot share what business or where this is located because of privacy and safety for the property owner.  Since the office will not be manned 24/7, no one wants to see the property defaced or vandalized.

As neighbors (and many of our readers) band together and work with the C-PAB committee, there is positive change is happening!  Thanks go out to everyone who has joined our newsletter, contributed with posts on social media, showed up to thank our LAPD officers and helped to make our voices heard. We are succeeding in getting our City agencies engaged with the problems on Melrose.  We will make this a safe and friendly place to live, work, shop and pray again!

What Types of Stores do you want to see on Melrose?

Our survey poll is still open! Please spend 2 minutes and provide your opinions.

Part of our effort to improve the experience of wanting to come and shop on Melrose includes reimagining the types of stores YOU would like to see on the street.  What's YOUR opinion? The answers will be shared with leasing agents and the Melrose BID to help promote a safer and friendlier Melrose shopping experience for neighbors and guests that come to our area.

Walk Wednesdays!

Take a walk with your Melrose Village neighbors ~ Wednesday nights - 7 p.m.

Would you like to meet some of your neighbors? Maybe you want to get off the couch and lose a few pounds.  Maybe you would just like to feel safe with a group walking our neighborhood.  We'd like to make this happen!  Regardless if you want to walk 1 block or 1 mile, it's up to you.  We want to make this an enjoyable and no stress walk so we will start with a short walk down Waring beginning at Spaulding to Gardner where there is a traffic light at Melrose, cross Melrose to Clinton, turn right and head back to Spaulding and then circle back to where we started.  You can join in at any location on the route that is nearest to you or meet at Spaulding and Waring at 7 p.m.  Anyone is welcome to join the fun and feel free to bring your opinions and concerns. If the group wants to walk further, we can extend this in any direction after we circle back to the starting point. (As with any type of exercise, consult your physician before to make sure this is the right thing for you to be doing.)

Walks will begin on Wednesday Sept 8th.  PLEASE bring a mask to wear and some water to drink (preferably not while wearing your mask!).

If this proves successful, we have group organizers that want to expand this idea to different times, days and maybe even try different group types like families with strollers or families with young children.

MidCity West Neighborhood Council will not write a letter of No Confidence in L.A. County District Attorney George Gascon!

Here's another great reason to attend a Mid-City West NC general board meeting.  Last month, at the beginning of the meeting when allowed to make public comment, I made a request that SOMEONE, ANYONE on the board please take up the issue of joining over 24 other L.A. County Cities in writing a No Confidence letter regarding our Los Angeles County D.A. Gason.  I spoke with 4 MCW members before the meeting and they all agreed that the current 35 member board wasn't going to devote any time or resources to doing this. In other words, no one on the MCW board wanted to expend their political capital on this. Why? I'm not sure! But I made the public comment and put the ball in MCW's court...to do NOTHING with.  If you feel strongly about the issues of how the "no bail - catch and release policy" is effecting the safety of our neighborhood, you can join the next MCWNC ZOOM meeting and make the same request again...and again...and again until something is done or the D.A is recalled.

These are my thoughts & opinions only.

WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE MCW COUNCIL TO ACT ON THIS: A Melrose Village Neighborhood Alliance member suggested to MCW President, Lauren Nichols in May 2021 that we should have a zoom meeting to discuss the issue of Building Density Bonuses. The idea is to have the meeting chaired by advocates on both sides of this issue. If you support this, please email lnichols@midcitywest.org and make your voice heard.

In addition to the above suggestion, we can add writing a "No Confidence" letter regarding DA Gascon to the list of items we're waiting to hear back on.

Melrose BID Crime Prevention Meeting

This meeting is usually held on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m.

You need to email kim@urbanlegendpr.com to get on the list and receive the zoom link details.  The next meeting is July 13th due to the July 4th holiday.

This is an opportunity to speak directly to the people who help shape Melrose Ave.Get on the list!

We have brought this up before, but feel it's worth mentioning again...

What brought you to sign up for our newsletters?  We want to believe it is because you wish to learn what's going on and to participate in advocating for a safer and cleaner neighborhood. Most of you who receive this email live in Zone 2 or are affected by what happens on Melrose.  This newsletter contains links to the meetings to sign up for the Melrose BID Crime meeting, most of the Mid City West Neighborhood Council meetings and the LAPD C-PAB meeting.

Here's the important part:  Neither the Melrose Bid or the MCWNC meetings have neighbors, referred to as 'stakeholders' attend very often.  Most of the sub-committees for MCWNC have NO 'stakeholders' attend.  So what happens when elected representatives get no input from those they are voted to represent?  They go off and turn their attention to their own pet projects instead of advocating for the people and the neighborhoods they serve!

So PLEASE get involved!  If you find a meeting topic in the list above that you are interested in and if you can attend just ONE meeting to make a comment or offer support to someone making comment, it will make a difference!  Tell them you are part of The Melrose Village Neighborhood Alliance!

C-PAB (Community - Police Advisory Board)
