American Canyon Arts Foundation, May 2020

Arts Foundation Updates

As many of you know, most special events and activities have either been canceled/rescheduled, or turned "virtual" using online services such as Zoom.  While the Arts Foundation is not producing anything at this time, we are still working on projects for when we do re-open.

  • Scholarships.  We interviewed four High School Seniors as potential recipients for a scholarship.  Each wants to pursue a career in the arts, whether it's screenwriting, teaching music or becoming a Disney Imagineer!  We will announce the names next month, and we hope to get some photos, too, even though there won't be the traditional Awards Assembly as in prior years.
  • Musician Support.  We are working on a new program in which we can provide support for local musicians, both in terms of insurance coverage and helping find gigs for those artists!  We are working with the City as well as local musicians to make this happen.  We'll announce more later.
  • Community Mosaic.  It's tough finishing a community mosaic when you're supposed to be 6' apart!!  Most of the panels have been "tiled" but we need to do some finishing touches before we can finish the three panels.  Once this is complete, we are still working on physically installing the three panels onto the exterior wall of the Boys & Girls Club.  Any structural engineers are encouraged to contact us!  AmCanArts@gmail.com.
  • Art Extravaganza/Youth Art Show.  We still plan to combine the two events and the shows are tentatively scheduled for October 24-25.  We are also hoping to roll out our new Musicians service as well as some other creative activities as part of the show.

ACNV Announces Emergency Grants

The Arts Council Napa Valley has secured funding to provide artists and nonprofits a limited amount of money to help offset the impacts of the coronavirus.  The deadline to file for these Emergency Artist Funds is June 5 by 5pm.  Maximum grant amount is $2500, but individual artists are eligible as well as nonprofits, provided they are involved in the arts.  Funds have also been set aside for Napa County Schools.

The de Young Open

In recognition of their 125th anniversary, the de Young is hosting a juried community art exhibit, limited to artists in the nine Bay Area Counties (including Napa).  In addition to the prestige of showing your work, 100% of the proceeds from any sale will go to the artist.

Any Bay Area artist over 18 is encouraged to apply using the Museum's online application process.  Submittals will be accepted from June 1 through June 14.

Art Online!

With Sheltering at Home still the norm for most of us, taking art classes becomes a challenge, not to mention enjoying an Art Show or doing some Plein Air painting.  But there's plenty of online classes and events you can pursue.  Empty Easel is one such source--and their site includes a wide variety of useful tips, blogs and business advice.

Nimbus Arts has also promoted online art classes.  Here's a link to their website.  You can go to our website, where we are adding more links on a regular basis.

COVID-19 Resources

There's a lot of uncertainty about this virus, not only from a public health perspective, but also from an economic one.  We're providing two links that we feel will help you find out what you need to know or where to go for more help.

The first is the City of American Canyon's website.  This is a great consolidation of links and information, including the latest statistics, Emergency Public Health Orders, Testing opportunities, and phone/email contacts.

A second resource is the County's Ready Napa County website. It is more focused on helping people in times of need, whether it's Covid-19, fires or earthquakes (we've had them all).  It includes the latest public health updates, as well as food and housing assistance, education & childcare, as well as mental health services.

Please take advantage of these resources.  And stay safe!

ACAF Board Meeting Highlights

The Board's last meeting was in March, right before everything started to shut down.   You can download a copy of the March meeting minutes here. At this point in time, it's not clear when we will be able to meet again.  The Art Extravaganza and Youth Art Show will still be combined and is tentatively scheduled for this October.  Other events have been canceled.

All active or future ACAF members are welcomed to attend Board Meetings, which are generally held on the Second Tuesday of each month, starting at 7:00 pm, at the AC Library Meeting Room. (But send us an email first, to make sure!!)

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

WIthout the Art Extravaganza to draw new/returning members, we have no new members to report for this month.  With everyone staying at home, or conserving what little money they may have to work with, it is not surprising.

We hope to announce a new program for musicians and hope that will spur new memberships.  Let us know if your want to be kept in the loop.  At the March Board meeting, we agreed to establish a new membership rate for musical groups:  a $40/year "Youth Band" rate and an $80/year "Adult Band" rate.  The rate would cover the entire membership of the band.  We still need to work out some of the details (age brackets, for example; and limits on how many band members would be covered).

Membership dues for everyone else are still only $35 for individuals; $65 for family memberships and $10 for Students under 23.  Membership not only shows your support for the Arts in American Canyon, it gives you access to discounted rates and the right to participate in the governance of the Foundation.
