When I write a newsletter, I ask, “What information would be of interest?” We are all busy; there is too much to read already; and I hear, “It is the Republican Party's responsibility, not mine.” The stakes are too high to think this way anymore. We must all be informed and take action.
In a bleak point of the Revolutionary War, General Washington looked at his troops during one of the coldest days recorded: a third were shoeless and wore rags on their feet; a third had dysentery; and a third were fit to fight. It was Christmas morning. It would have been easy to stay huddled in their tents. George Washington passed out a leaflet written by Thomas Paine, The Crisis. It opens, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”
The rest is history. The soldiers crossed the Delaware and invaded Trenton where the Hessian mercenary soldiers were caught off guard, and that became a significant battle victory for the colonists.
