January, 2022 Newsletter

Happy New Year!

The bulbs in this photo sit on our kitchen table to remind us that spring is coming and to keep us focused on the future. This year has been so full of upended expectations and canceled plans. It's so easy to get discouraged. Wherever you are, and however the year end is landing for you, I send you good wishes and hope for green shoots and brighter days.

As I reach the end of 2021, with all of its highs and lows, I am so grateful for the role that writing and reading have played throughout my life and particularly during uncertain and anxious times. I found escape in books by other writers this year and I was often relieved to be able to escape into Maggie's fictional world. I am indebted to all of my readers and to the librarians, booksellers, and book reviewers, book bloggers, bookstagrammers, and everyone who loves the written (or spoken) word!

Sending you wishes for everything good and hopeful in the new year!

I'm giving away an advance reader copy or ARC to one of my newsletter subscribers at the end of January! Make sure you're on my list for a chance to win. My publisher will also be giving away some ARCs over at Goodreads and I'll have some fun Instagram and Facebook contests coming up.

I can't wait to share The Drowning Sea with all of you!

Fish Chowder is one of our family's holiday traditions, but it's so good — and so perfect for the cold, dreary days of January too — that I make it long after we've put away the holiday decorations. This is a good recipe, but you can improvise. The essential components are salt pork, chunks of a firm white fish like cod, diced potato and onion, cream, and fish stock. Enjoy!
