We are incredibly proud to announce that Ocean Conservation Namibia successfully ran its first campaign
#100SealsForTime in the month of May 2020. Our main team of three dedicated activists managed to catch and disentangle 100 Cape Fur Seals within one month.
We were off to a challenging start. We had been planning for almost a year to bring together a team of six activists to run the campaign in June 2020, but then Covid-19 entered the stage. Antoine was the only one to make it to Namibia to Katja and Naude before the borders closed down in March. Alba, Roman and Rodolphe could not travel to Namibia.
Instead of cancelling or indefinitely postponing the campaign, we decided to do it anyways, just a month earlier, in May, with only three of us, not six.
Lockdown in Namibia did not stop us from patrolling the beaches at Pelican Point every morning. We followed the same routine every day: wake up early, pack our seal catching gear, drive to the beach, observe the colonies from the distance with our binoculars until we find entangled animals, plan the strategy, and go for it!
Our 100th rescue happened on 30 May 2020. We had only one more seal to reach our goal, and the universe had planned a very special rescue for our team. The last seal of the campaign was a medium sized female, horribly entangled in an illegal gill net. You can check out our last rescue here.
Our first campaign is officially concluded!
