Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD):

COPD is a collective term for a group of lung conditions that causes breathing difficulties and often associated with smoking.

* Chronic Bronchitis - long-term inflammation to the bronchial tubes

* Emphysema - air sacs in the lungs are damaged

Common symptoms of COPD includes breathlessness, persistent chesty cough, frequent chest infections and persistent wheezing. COPD is also broken down into 4 stages, for information on the different stages of COPD click here.

Early diagnose and treatment of COPD is important as this condition is permanent and cannot be reversed. Please see your GP if you are worried that you may have COPD, your doctor will review your symptoms and may order the necessary tests to diagnose your condition.

How does salt therapy help?

Salt is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and once breathed in the salt helps to reduce the inflammation in the respiratory tract, making it easier to breathe. Salt therapy is a simple relaxing and effective treatment for COPD and many other breathing conditions.

Salt Therapy for COPD

Leslie's Story:

My name is Leslie and I am 81 years old and was diagnosed with COPD over 5 years ago. I struggled with breathlessness, chest infections and difficulty with coughing would often cause me to black out. It was my district nurse who recommended the Salt Clinic on one of her routine visits, she said I could benefit from salt therapy for my COPD symptoms.

I had my first salt therapy session back in November 2016 and for the past 3 years I have had 2 sessions a week, with one of those session combined with gentle yoga. I know that COPD cannot be cured but since coming I’ve noticed my breathing has improved and my blackouts have stopped and my chest infections has become less frequent. My oxygen level has also increased as I was able to join the gym this year to help keep me active.

I’m thankful that my COPD was diagnosed early enough for me to do something about it and that my nurse told me about the Salt Clinic, as I know if it hadn’t been for salt therapy my symptoms would be a lot worse and my blackouts would have also become more frequent. The blackouts were a constant worry for my wife Jean as she had to call the ambulance for me a few times.

I highly recommend salt therapy for anyone with a breathing problem, not just COPD. Over the years I have met so many people with various breathing and skin problems and they all have said they have seen improvements to their conditions. Through yoga I have also made some good friends as we are part of a small Thursday group. I look forward to visiting the Salt Clinic every week for my regular dose of salt therapy, whilst my wife Jean enjoys a cuppa tea and a chat with Linh in reception.
