May News!

Welcome to May at BTC!

We still seem to be getting April showers which has set us back a bit with our clay courts as we need them to dry out to finish working on them. Let’s hope for some sunny days.  As a reminder, please remain off the courts until we post and let you know that the courts are open.

Project/Repairs

Our spring project is to repave our side parking lot, scheduled to begin as soon as the weather breaks. Mother Nature took its toll this winter, giving us this unique sponge effect, making walking on a rather pleasurable experience, but parking on not so much.  The project calls for installation of over 100 ft of drainage pipe and 3 inches of binder, and will be built to stand the test of time.

We have started the demolition of our pool shed remnants. What happens next remains to be seen but we do hope to open the back area to our members!

US Open

After much debate, we have decided to run our US Open Bus trip! With the Open allowing only 50% spectators (for the moment) we felt running one bus, 45 available seats was appropriate and manageable.  We travel Day 2, Tuesday August 31 and cost is $145, which includes transportation, ticket to Arthur Ashe stadium, our après match tailgate party and movies for the ride home. We have already sold over 30 seats! For the moment, we will ask all passengers to either be vaccinated or have a negative covid test. As we know this may change. We take reservations on a first come first serve basis, with payment securing your spot. Call 722-3491 and happy to keep our US Open bus trip tradition alive.

Raffle

After a year hiatus, we will offer free box seat tickets to the ATP Men’s Newport Hall of Fame tournament. Played on grass courts in a stately and intimate setting, our shaded box seats provide the perfect place to view professional tennis. At the moment Newport is reduced to 50% spectator capacity, and that can change.

The dates are July 12-15, Monday-Thursday. The way this works is simple, simply e-mail us back btc@tennisctr.com saying: “Newport raffle”.  Deadline is Sunday May 16. Monday morning we will pick 4 winners who receive 2 tickets each to their day of choice! Have some fun with this, add maybe, your favorite player or who you would most like to see live, your favorite Newport bar etc! Good luck

JTT NEWS!

This past Sunday, May 1 BTC fielded two teams in the Junior Team Tennis Regional Qualifier; 18U in Syracuse & 14U in Rochester. Our 18U were victorious and will advance to sectionals held in Flushing Meadows!  Our 14s ended in a tie with Rochester losing a super tiebreaker 10-8; could not have been closer!

The highlight reel moment was Logan Howard beating David Fenner, a player Logan has lost to 3 times previously.  No one beats Logan 4 times in a row!

These could be the strongest teams BTC has ever fielded and we are really proud of our juniors and the progress they are making.

Special thanks Amanda Spottek, Ewelina Holdrege, and Michelle Wilson who chaperoned our juniors to regionals and our JTT coaches, Carl Speicher, Lester Pangilinan and Jason Spencer for donating their time and expertise as volunteer coaches and going the extra mile.

The participants for the 18s were: (pic left) Zach Burpee, Logan Howard, Isaac Spottek, Connor Frey, Adele Giovannoni, Kate Salamida and Adelie Wilson.

The 14s team (pic rt): Back row: Tyler Cranfield, Adrian Holdrege, and JJ Herzing.

Front Row: Lily Lengyel, Natalie Crowley, Aviva Kaminsky

Adult USTA Leagues:

If you are interested in participating in our adult spring USTA leagues, please contact the front desk for more information.  We have established an USTA ambassador team which we hope will help guide and grow our leagues to appeal to all levels and interest of play. Our “A” team will help guide you through registration process and find a team to play on. They will also introduce Non-Advancing leagues at our upcoming captains meeting, to begin as soon as the advancing leagues finish. These non-advancing leagues allow for cross level play, exciting and different playing formats with an emphasis of fun and social engagement. Our hope is they will appeal to a broad spectrum of players and create a buzz and increase participation, giving USTA leagues/summer play a much needed boost on the arm.

We are having the following divisions this year:  Men’s 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 along with a Women’s 3.0, 3.5 & 4.0 league.

Adult Singles Ladders

Both singles ladders have been so much fun to run this year. Great participation, close matches and spirited play. Next round will be our last, ending May 23. We will then offer a singles league one night of the week TBD.  Thanks for your efforts and solid tennis!
