Emissions from Hybrid and Plug-In Electric Vehicles

Have you ever wondered how EVs compare to plug-in hybrids, hybrids and conventional vehicles? It turn out that much depends on the source of the electricity used to charge EVs. Because Ohio relies heavily on coal, hybrid vehicles compare quite favorably to EVs, and a little better than plug-in hybrids. The U.S. Department of Energy allows you to search by state and compare with the national average for each type of vehicle. These data underscore the need for Ohio to restore its Renewable Portfolio Standard, which was reduced in 2019 from 12.5% to 8.5%, and move toward less reliance on coal.
