One does not simply...

WELCOME!

Hey there! I'm so glad you're here! You can now say you've been here since the beginning. Don't delete this email because it'll probably be worth millions in a few years...or not. Either way, if I were Oprah, this would be the part where I'd shout, "You get a car! And you get a car!" But alas, I'm an author and not Oprah. Funds are a little short. HOWEVER, I would like to give a special shout-out to both Zara Hoffman and Becca Day, my website beta testers. They are the bomb. I sincerely apologize the shout-out isn't nearly as wonderful as a new car.

I digress. Ahem...

PUBLISHING UPDATES

ANNOUNCEMENT #1

AHHH! I'm SO close to being done polishing up The Promise Of Shattered Stars. SO SO CLOSE! I'm really excited about taking the next step in my journey. I've been cracking away at my abysmal query letter and synopsis. If you have any stellar critiquing prowess in those two areas, please let me know if you'd be willing to take a look. I've been scouring Query Shark, Writer's Digest, and other resources, but having someone look at it would be lovely!

...BECAUSE I'm going to start QUERYING June 1st!!!!!!! Whattttt. (that is if I don't get into #RevPit, of course)

More on this soon...

#RevPit

So...I entered #RevPit this past month! If you're unfamiliar with it, it's a contest where the winners receive a free developmental edit from editors. I wasn't going to enter at first because I had to finish up implementing feedback, but then I thought to myself...Why am I passing up this opportunity? The worst they can say is no. So, I entered on a whim. We find out on Monday, May 4th who the winners are, but regardless of the outcome, it was an experience that only helps me prepare for my publishing career!

Push yourself out of your comfort zone. You'll learn something along the way regardless of the outcome.

WRITING UPDATE

While I'm currently finishing up a polish on TPoSS and outlining my new novel, I'm happy to say I love torturing myself with goals I will never achieve! Probably not the best attitude to have going into it, but I'm realistic. Ha. Anyway, I've decided to take on the challenge of writing a short story EVERY day throughout the month of May.

Am I crazy? A resounding yes. This challenge is hosted by StoryADay. My plan is to write a story each day (min. 1500 words) inspired by one of the songs on my YouTube Fantasy Music playlist. I'm pumped. Click here to see Day 1's inspo! Go check it out and let me know if you're also joining in! Feel free to use my playlist as inspiration for your own stories, too! It'll be fun...mostly. I hope to share my stories on my blog...hopefully.

BOOKS I'M READING

Writing Craft: I've decided I'll bite the bullet and try the STC outlining method. I'm SUPER excited to dive in with my new Adult Sci-Fi "Project Phantom." You can check out my Books page to find out more about it!

"Fun" Reading: I tore through City of Brass in less than a week, so with Kingdom of Copper, I'm trying to pace myself because the next book doesn't come out until June! If you saw my Insta post, you'll know just how much I'm enjoying this story. The world-building and character development are absolutely wonderful.

ICYMI

ANNOUNCEMENT #2

Well...I'm starting a YOUTUBE CHANNEL!

*cue applause*

I decided to start one mainly because I think it'd just be fun. I also thought it would be really cool to document my journey to becoming a published author...and hopefully inspire someone else along the way.

My first video will go live on MONDAY, MAY 4th! Click here to be taken to my channel. Subscribe if you feel so inclined.

Yay for cringy videos I'll be embarrassed to look back on later! BUT like I said before, I'm willing to push myself past my comfort zone so I can learn and only improve! I just have to take the leap!

WRITING PROMPT

Write a short story, vignette, or novel premise using this crow-counting rhyme:

One for sorrow

Two for mirth

Three for a wedding

Four for a birth

Five for silver

Six for gold

Seven for a secret never to be told

Eight for a kiss

Nine for a wish

and ten for a bird you must not miss.

I would love to read what you come up with! :)

Until next time,

Alli
