Dear Supporters and Friends of Dhammagiri, Hopefully transition to our new newsletter service has been smooth for everyone, and you're all receiving this email without problems 😊 With the discontinuation of 'Tinyletter', the archive of all previous newsletters has now been vanished by 'Mailchimp' into nothingness. A lot of my time and considerable effort had gone into writing these 120 newsletters, and consequently I've developed quite some attachment to that archive, and was disappointed to see it deleted by Mailchinp. However, it's a good lesson that all formations are impermanent, in particular formations that are just tiny bits of electrical charge on some data server in the US. We have become used to store things 'in the cloud', but all of that can vanish or be deleted any time, and it's good to contemplate that reality. Whatever we're attached to will ultimately bring us suffering as result, so we better abandon (or at least weaken) all attachments by contemplating the impermanence of all formations ('sabbe sankhārā aniccā'). "Sabbe dhammā nālaṃ abhinivesāya" "Nothing is worth clinging to / Nothing is good enough to hold on to" Majjhima Nikāya / Middle Length Discourses #37 - Shorter Discourse on the Destruction of Craving |

Luang Por Vajiro Pics, Podcasts & Youtube Ajahn Vajiro's visit was a great inspiration for us all, and he shared Dhamma with us most generously. Anumodanā to everyone who helped and contributed to make his stay enjoyable. Naturally, as is the nature of all sankhāras, his visit was also impermanent and had to come to an end, even though he kindly agreed to stay for two full weekends. But at least we have plenty of Dhamma reflections and pics recorded, so that we can continue to benefit from his insights and guidance even after his departure. Pics: Audio Podcasts: Dhammagiri Website No need for any podcast app, just listen in your browser. Also a very nice search function 🧐: Just put 'Ajahn Vajiro' into search, or 'Guided Meditation', or 'Loving kindness', or any subject matter, and you see all our podcasts on that subject 🙂

As you can see on photo below, the new Dhammagiri T-Shirt proved very popular- many donned their new shirts right on Magha Puja day itself. Sorry to all those who didn't get a shirt so far, we had only 100 in first batch, and didn't quite expect them to be in such high demand. However, we're currently preparing a much larger second release, including Polo shirt version, which should hopefully satisfy everyone interested. If you're curious about the design on the back of the t-shirt, you can find more info on the 'Tiratana' symbol of Triple Gem on our Dhamma Reflections blog here. |

Ajahn Moneyyo in Sri Lanka 18/03 to 11/05 Ajahn Moneyyo has never been to Sri Lanka, and is looking very much forward to see the island of serendipity, which has played such a crucial role in preserving the Theravada tradition for more than two millennia. Singhalese culture has maintained it's Therevada Buddhist heart for more than 2,200 years, despite all vicissitudes of war and occupation and colonization. While all of India first became mostly Mahayana & Vajrayana, and finally lost the Sāsanā completely, the island of Lanka kept the beacon of Dhamma shining. Ajahn Moneyyo is happy to finally experience that Buddhist culture first hand in the country itself. His itinerary in Sri Lanka: 19th March to 30th March 30th March to 11th April 11th April to 17th April 17th April to 22nd April Springhill monastery (Ulpathkanda) On one day during his stay near Kandy, he hopes to visit the Temple of the sacred tooth, and 'Forest Hermitage' in Udawatta Kele Forest Reserve
22nd to 24th April 24th April to 06th May 06th May to 10th May 10th May Sat 11 Ma

Shower Donga Installed The first laundry/shower demountable has been installed at Kuṭi #1 'Suññatā'. Through the open entry door, you can see the high quality shower cubicle with gas heated warm water, and the external deck with surrounding bush - this is a shower with splendid views over D'Aguilar National Park. The photo below shows the laudry tub and cabinets with cleaning gear. Big anumodanā to everyone who contributed so generously to this project, both financially and with the daunting task of getting the demountable into location and set up properly 😊 |

Latest Pics Photo Album Dhammagiri deliberately does not use InstaFaceTwitXLine, in order not to get caught up in the short-lived attention span and superficial exitement of social media. Instead, we publish on our website (and youtube and podcast apps). However, we understand that a website can be a bit static. For those who like to just have a quick look what's going on at Dhammagiri recently, we've now created a 'Latest Pics' photo album. This album can be viewed in 4 modes: Simply scrolling from top to bottom is default on opening album Mouse hover / one tap shows title & description superimposed on images Click / double-tap opens 'one-page-per-pic' view with title & description visible next to image Click or tap again to open full-screen view (title & description not visible)
(Sounds complicated, but is actually very intuitive - just have a look 👀)
The image below is from that new album. It shows Tan Dipako at the ocean with the Gold Coast skyline in the background. I really like that Australia is so spacious that one can find almost emty beaches, where one have a solitary walk on the ocean shore 🌊🦈🏞️ Tan Dipako has left us as planned after almost 3 months at Dhammagiri, to visit Thailand and Malaysia, before returning to Amaravati for Luang Por Sumedho's birthday celebration on the weekend 18/10 May. Ajahn Dhammasiha is looking forward to catching up with him again at Amaravati - it was a pleasure having him here, and to hear him share his experiences in Thailand, and his assessment of the potential for an Ajahn Chah monastery in Cambodia. On the new album, you can also see him exploring the Australian wilderness in Lamington National Park - just click the pic below and scroll to bottom of album. |

Ajahn Moneyyo's Mother Completed 3 Months Retreat Elisabeth has now completed her second 3 months retreat at Dhammagiri, and returned to her home in Vienna, Austria. Anumodanā and muditā to her for her dedicated Dhamma practice. It's inspiring to see a mother of Western background so supportive, even enthusiastic, about her son being a Buddhist monk. And it is equally inspiring to see a son from Western background practising respect and gratitude to parents so diligently, just as the Buddha advised. In the photo below Elisabeth is pointing to her son and relates how much he helps her in continuously deepening her Dhamma practice, her meditation, and her understanding of the suttas. To me this image perfectly represents their admirable relationship: Physically a bit apart, as appropriate between a bhikkhu and a female, but the Bodhi tree in the background representing the very strong Dhamma connection between then. The Bodhi tree above them symbolizes the Dhamma that keeps them mentally close together, despite the physical distance caused by Ajahn Moneyyo's status as monk (and his physical distance in Australia on the other side of the world from Vienna). Dhamma is beyond space and time ('appamañña' & 'akālika'), and when we're practising Dhamma in line with Dhamma ('dhammānudhamma-paṭipatti'), we feel very close to all other meditators, including even the Buddha himself. We wish Elisabeth well for smoothly settling in back in Vienna, and hopefully she'll be strong enough to visit us again next year. |
