Ma Jun 马军

Ma Jun is known for his ability to respond to different spaces. In recent years, he has increasingly worked with new media, incorporating language and sound in specially conceived stage works.

With numerous important pieces from his „New China Series“, BMCA holds an important body of works by the artist.

The BMCA Collection includes important objects from the New China Series, in which Ma Jun memorialises everyday objects in his familiar material, porcelain, in oversized form.

In this way, the realisation of the particular model of a luxury limousine, of which no more than five were built in China, became a special project. Ma Jun had casts made of fibreglass and was given permission to complete the car sculptures in the drawing room of the academy in Beijing. Due to the significantly greater amount of work involved, the three car sculptures were still in the process of being completed and painted even after the calculated time had elapsed, and soon found themselves surrounded by a crowd of painting students drawing on their easels. The photo documentation Ma Jun made of the process of creating his sculptures resembles a performance planned down to the last gesture.
