Looking Forward to 2022!

Calling All Hermanas...

The LADYS program- Charlottesville is looking for 2 Hermanas who would like to be serve as mentors this year from the end of February until May. Due to the virtual setting of LADYS this year and lowered interest in the virtual format, we have had to postpone LADYS as a full year program to a semester program for this academic year. We have promising LADYS mentees who would thrive through great mentorship this semester as one prepares for college this August and another will enter her senior year in high school. We are reaching out to Hermanas who would like to mentor this spring 2022 semester. Please reach out to CvilleLADYSProgram@gmail.com for more information.

Additionally, if you are not able to serve as a mentor but would like to be involved in some capacity with the program, such as being part of the Board of Directors for the LADYS Program-Cville next academic year 2022-2023, or serve as a speaker or interviewee in upcoming workshops for our LADYS mentees, please reach out to us at CvilleLADYSProgram@gmail.com.

~ We welcome Hermanas from all states! ~

February is Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. This year's theme “Black Health and Wellness,” as outlined by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
Throughout February, we celebrate the achievements and contributions African Americans have made to our society, while still recognizing that the battle for true equality continues today. Even after February is over, let’s remember that Black lives will FOREVER matter.

Lunar New Year

Happy Lunar New Year! Many Asian cultures historically follow a lunar, rather than solar, calendar, so the Lunar New Year falls on a different day on the Gregorian calendar every year. February 1st marks the Lunar New Year, most commonly associated with the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. The Lunar New Year 2022 celebrates the Year of the Tiger.

Wishing everyone good luck, health, and cheer!

Cornell STEM Summer Programs

DPE is proud to offer the week-long CURIE and CATALYST Academies for rising high school juniors and seniors each July. The CURIE Academy is a week-long summer program at Cornell University for young women interested in learning about engineering. The CATALYST Academy brings together young men and women of diverse racial, socioeconomic, and geographic backgrounds to spend a week at Cornell learning about engineering fields and opportunities, gaining actual hands-on research experience, and forging peer and mentor connections, all while still finding time to have fun.

Did you know that Virginia is home to the country's second oldest institute of higher education, the College of William and Mary? This school had some pretty prestigious alumni as well, including presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler.
