Vol. 1: Issue 9

The Kailee Mills Foundation informs the public on the importance of seat belt use while encouraging and inspiring communities to protect themselves and their passengers by always wearing their seat belts.

Newest Partners:

Harris County Sheriff's Office

We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Harris County Sheriff's Office! July 30, 2018, Ed Gonzalez, Harris County's sheriff, along with David and Wendy Mills, parents of Kailee Mills, held a press conference to reveal the partnership.

Much is in store for this newfound union. The first initiative will be to have seat belt checks at the high schools beginning this fall. While David, Wendy, and volunteers with Kailee in the Community have been running seat belt checks in the Klein District, we can now cover more ground with the help of Harris County's finest. Making sure students, staff, teachers, and parents are buckled in before they leave the parking lot is a gentle reminder that it doesn't matter how far you are driving, always buckle up.

With more seat belt soldiers fighting with us to ensure the safety of the communities that make up the world, we can spread our mission and Kailee's legacy further. If we can save one life, our work is worth it.

Friendship Day

August 5th serves as the recognized day of friendship. Make sure you show your friends how much you love them by asuring they are buckled in the entire car ride. Going to the movies? Buckle up. Grabbing a snocone? Buckle up. Going to the pool? Buckle up. However you spend Friendship Day, make sure if you are getting in a vehicle that every single passenger is buckled in before the car is in motion and STAYS buckled in the whole trip. Snap a picture before your trip and send it to Live On to share in the next issue!

Reminder from Kailee

Live On received a wonderful story from one of our readers about getting a reminder from Kailee one hot summer day while shopping:

This isn't newsletter worthy, but I chuckle every time I think of it. My daughter was casual friends with Kailee at Klein Collins High School. They had Sports Medicine class together and that's how their paths crossed. Even though they weren't the best of friends, Kailee always had a smile and a kind word for my daughter every time their paths crossed. Kailee's passing was hard for my daughter because at 15, who expects someone they know, someone close to their own age, someone they communicate with regularly, to be taken from the world so fast, without warning? She struggled for a long time with, "That could have been me. It could have been my best friend. It could have been anyone."

Anyway, not long ago we were out shopping at the Target shopping center at 99/Kuykendahl (in Spring, TX). We were going from one end of the parking lot to the other so we drove instead of making the long walk in the heat. We didn't put seat belts on since we would stay in the parking lot. Well, that was until the hot seat belt buckle touched my daughter's arm and burned her.

"Okay, Kailee! You got me! I will put my seat belt on!" and she quickly did just that. I chuckled at her because it was funny and she laughed back. "That was Kailee's way of making sure I put my seat belt on, Mom! I'm doing it!"

I never met Kailee, but the stories I have read and heard from the countless people who were blessed to be a part of her short life remind me that I am the one who missed out on knowing a beautiful young lady. Every time I see a Kailee sticker, pass the accident site, or see a Facebook post about Kailee, I am reminded of how precious life is and I feel a tug on my heartstrings for her parents. I could be that parent. That could have been one of my children. Hopefully, those feelings resonate in other parents as well so they can continually remind their children of the importance of wearing their seat belts.

Thanks for continuing to share Kailee's story to remind us all to be selfish with our safety.

Thank you, Mandy for sharing! This is an absolutely amazing story and we love hearing them. This was definitely newsletter worthy! Thank you for your support and for spreading Kailee's legacy and reminding people to always

Kailee's Angels

The morning of November 8, 2016 rocked the lives of three small boys and their family. Jennifer Johnson, 30, was involved in a car crash on I-45 in Houston, TX. The vehicle she was driving hit the concrete median and rolled over. She was partially ejected from the vehicle due to not wearing her seat belt. Her sons were also riding in the vehicle. They were wearing their seat belts and survived.

Her mother, Karen Little, recalls that day:

"I will never forget that phone call - Jevin (10) said "Grandma please come get me, my momma is dead." My heart broke into a million pieces for those boys, my husband, my daughter, her sisters. It was all a blur. I couldn't seem to get to them fast enough. The drive was agonizing. The thought of her being gone - the pain was unbearable. Knowing the boys were alive - the joy was immense. I've never experienced great sorrow and joy at the same moment. All our hearts still hurt. We saw the boys roll in the E.R. alive and we put our arms around them and we've never let them go. Never will. We will never understand why she had to go but we are thankful we didn't lose them all."

Jennifer was a single mom and left behind a 1, 3, and 10 year old. The summer of 2016 was her oldest's very first trip to Church Camp. Jennifer's mom remembers him telling her about what he learned that week at camp like it was yesterday. Karen truly believes God was preparing him for the tragic moment that was coming. This is what he learned about Jesus that week: "they taught us that I am His child, He loves me, He is coming back for me and even though things get tough I can always trust Him". Karen says, "A few months later his precious momma and the boys were in that car crash where she lost her life. I truly believe Jesus was there at that moment with Jennifer to carry her to Heaven and at the very same moment was with the boys to protect them so they could finish the task He has set for them. We will never understand why. We've asked a million times. We trust You, Lord. Please continue to lead and guide us. Please give Jennifer a hug from us too."

Please let Jennifer's story be a constant reminder to always wear your seat belt! Your family loves you, and shouldn't have to live a life without you.
