A FAMILY VENTURE

We have had many family members travel together to Tanzania with REACH Shirati in the past 12 years. The desire to share a volunteer experience, contribute to far away communities, and to contribute to positive change  are all great reasons. Another is the desire of parents to expand the world of their children with the enriching and educational experience of being immersed in a new culture and community very different from their own. Today we'd like to share the experiences of two young REACH volunteers who are joining us this summer for all those reasons and more!

Meet Anna and Christina

Anna Hodges: I volunteered with REACH in Shirati during the 2013 trip for about a month. It was fantastic! My favorite experience was shadowing with Dr. Chirangi at Shirati Hospital and distributing meals to patients with the Hospital Food Project. Dr. Chirangi’s extensive knowledge about infectious diseases inspired me to pursue a career in public health and medicine. Five years later, I have completed my Master’s in Public Health and Tropical Medicine and am starting medical school this Fall! I am so excited to be returning to Shirati this year because I'll have the opportunity to volunteer at the hospital again and apply my instruction in tropical medicine. Even better, I'll be able to share this experience with my sister Christina! She is looking forward to volunteering at Tina's school and getting to know the wonderful people of REACH and Shirati!

Christine Hodges: I just finished my first year of high school and next year I'll be a sophomore. I plan on studying architecture or science in the future. I've never been anywhere like Shirati before, but I'm super excited to go! I plan on teaching younger kids at Tina's School in math or English. I know my sister had a great time a few years ago and I know I will too, especially with her there!

About That Old Laptop...

Yes, many of us have one, an old laptop that has outlived its usefulness, not enough memory, not fast enough, not new enough! Well, for someone that old laptop means the world! It is the key that opens doors of opportunity and enables many students at Tina's School to get an education that is priceless. PLEASE CONTACT US if you have a laptop that you no longer need, and ask your family, friends and colleagues too. Our first Computer Learning project with OLPC devices at Tina's School was a huge success, (watch the video below) so we are now planning our next phase, and you can help us collect the laptops we need!

Share Us Please!

We'd love more people to know about our mission of creating bright futures through education! So please share our emails and our website and let your friends and community know about our accomplishments. Spread the word about what's possible and it will be come true.

Costly Books!

For our students, owning their own text book is a sense of pride. They are well aware that their school text books are really keys to a future made possible only through education. Please help us continue to provide them with text books and educational tools that make that bright future possible, by donating to our organization.
