VISIT FROM THE STATE UMPIRES MANAGER

June 21st we had a visit from the State Umpires Manager, James Waldorf. We made this an impromptu compulsory night and there was a good turnout to take part in James' training session.  Hopefully all members gained something from his knowledge and experience. First off James conducted training outside, then while he conducted an indoor session, we all had a lovely bowl (or two or three) of tasty hot soup to warm up with.  Thanks to Mal Gray and Katrina Orr.  Well done at short notice the soup was awesome.

James also has given some extra information and mentoring to our two RUMs who he said are doing  a great job.

He was very impressed with how we are doing things, that our families are included, our weekly awards and most of all that he got fed as well !!

Great to get visits from AFLQ and great to know we are on the right track with the development of our umpires!

AFLTUA SUPPORTING A NEW COMPETITION

Over the last couple of months, Tyler and Alan have been volunteering their time on Fridays to help out the Super Novas which is a new comp this year, so that they could have umpires for their games.

A great dedication from the boys to willingly give up their time.  Not only does it support this new competition but it is all good experience and development for them as well.

Here they are enjoying some pizza after one of the matches!

REP UMPIRING

Congratulations to Ryan Powell (Field); Duncan Barlagen, Tylor Winnett, Allan Harding and Nick Tiley (Boundary); Hayden Dowdell and Emily Radunz (Goals) who have been selected to umpire in the U17 Capricornia, Mackay, Townsville Combined Team vs AFL Goldfields Team on 4th July at Riverway. There will also be 2 field umpires from Victoria. Well done to everyone selected and you will do us proud.

There are a number of rep umpiring opportunities coming up over the next few weeks.  Please check the calendar for the dates and speak to either Jarrod or Kimberley if you have any queries.

FROM THE COMMITTEE/RUMs

  • The Association has retained its Level 3 Good Sports Accreditation for 2018.
  • Just a reminder that we have a "Safety"" Box for your keys, phones and bits and pieces while you are training - feel free to use it.
  • Presentation night has been set.  The date will be 22 September at the RSL's HMAS Room.  More info and tickets will come out in due course.
  • Don't forget to support our canteen.  This helps keep our compulsory night meals at little or no cost.  So far its working well.
  • With the recent spell of cold weather, we will be looking into jackets for umpires to be able to wear in 2019.
  • Accreditation - the process has a changed a little this year with accreditation. The up to date will be posted to the website very soon once confirmed.
  • As promised, the committee gave consideration to the suggestions in our box.  There were a couple of silly ones of course! but the main focus seemed to be on having a social night at the club rooms.  Our trusty Social Coordinator had in fact been looking into this, but speaking with the Cricket Club President, there are unfortunately some security issues around having functions at the club rooms with uninvited people hanging around, and he did not recommend it. Therefore Katrina will be looking at another venue in the near future. Keep the suggestions coming!

TRAINING SHIRTS AND SINGLETS

We still have training teeshirts and singlets available in most sizes.  We are getting a top-up order of the sizes we have run out of.  Will advise when these come in.

This has been a busy month behind the scenes for me and my fellow committee members that have been helping out and allowing me to bounce ideas off them...phew!

First up, thank you to all that responded to the surveys that Pieta sent out for me via FB. It has allowed me to gather vital data to ensure our end of year presentation night will be a great one.

As a ‘Mark the Date’ in the calendar - Saturday September 22nd looks like it will be the best possible date. I am just finalising some negotiations regarding the venue, but will announce this in the near future.

Another date that is coming up that I will need all hands on deck as possible...is

Sunday July 8th

This is going to be a brilliant opportunity for raising vital funds for our association.

We are hosting a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Northshore. Closer to the date I will be asking you for assistance and to respond with when you can help out. It will not involve a whole day. But if everyone pitches in it should just involve shifts of a few hours at a time.

The funds raised help with subsidising our new training shirts as well as to help reduce the ticket prices for our presentation night.

*************

Now apologies to those that were looking forward to a gathering at the clubhouse on the 16th. There were a few safety concerns that need to be settled locally, and as such my plan is to reconvene this event, but likely at my place after the Bunnings BBQ.

*************

As always, if any of you have suggestions for what you would like us to do on the social front. Please approach me in person, or via the suggestion box that is available at training.

Well that’s about all for now…. See you round the paddock - KO

*************

And remember, we as an umpire group are proudly supported by our association sponsors. Please if you or anyone you know are in need of a product or service that they supply. Keep them in mind and mention that your part of the AFLTUA. That way they know that we are getting their brand out there.
