WAIT FOR ME AUDIOBOOK - COMING TO AMERICA! As you might remember, I am an audiobook obsessive, regularly listening to two or three books on my headphones each week. I was therefore thrilled when Harper UK issued WAIT FOR ME on audio, with the most fabulous narration done by Edinburgh-born actress Sarah McRae, most recently seen as Sandy in Outlander, and as Saray in Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands. |
|
|
And now, the WAIT FOR ME audiobook is coming to the USA! It will be released on June 19th on both digital download and audio CD. You can pre-order the audiobook on Audible or from Amazon, and if you'd like to listen to a few minutes of the opening chapter, there's an excerpt on the HarperCollins UK website - just click on the HAVE A LISTEN button. |

MEET MY DESIGNER! As promised, I'm excited to be introducing you to some of the most important people in my writing life. This month, please say hello to my amazing book designer, Aurora Parlagreco. With her beautiful work on WAIT FOR ME and IN ANOTHER TIME, Aurora has created such atmospheric covers, they absolutely take a reader back to the World War Two era before they've even picked either book off a shelf. It has been such a privilege to work with Aurora on my covers, and also the inside artwork. I hope you enjoy meeting her in my interview with Aurora below. |

Pocket bio Where are you from? Long Island, New York Where do you live now? Brooklyn, New York What genre do you read for pleasure? Literary fiction, dark mysteries, YA Favorite book ever? Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice How did you get to where you are now? Did you always want to design book covers? I’ve always loved books, so working in publishing is a dream come true! I got my BFA in Communication Design from Carnegie Mellon University, along with minors in Photography and English. I was lucky enough to intern in the Children's Design group at Harper before starting full time after graduation. Where do you start when you are putting together a cover? For each new book that I am assigned, I get a Cover Summary that includes a lot of important information- plot summary, character descriptions, as well as a list of competitive titles so that I can see where the book will fit into the existing market. If there is a manuscript available, I always read it before I get started. Click here to read the rest of my interview with Aurora |

D-DAY INVASION On June 6, 1944, the Allied invasion of a 50-mile stretch of German-occupied France began. Over 160,000 troops were landed on the beaches and by parachute, supported by more than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft. D-Day signified the beginning of the end of Hitler's dominance of mainland Europe and ultimately of the war itself. |

I could write for months about the details of this massive military operation, and still never hope to do justice to its importance to the war effort. So instead, I thought I'd share with you this sweet moment of D-Day history instead, courtesy of the newsreel-filmmakers of British Pathé. Click here to watch the very moving medal ceremony for two of the most unexpected airborne heroes of the D-Day operation, Gustav and Paddy... |

AVOIDING CLICHÉS There are three sentences which make me cheer out loud when I find them in any young adult novel I'm reading: "He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear," "He smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes," and "She let go of the breath she didn't realize she'd been holding." They are, or at least they have become, YA clichés. And yes,try as I might to avoid them, as you should, you'll probably find them in my books too. So instead of me giving you cliché-avoidance tips myself, I thought I'd let the master speak, the awesome Brooding YA Hero whose Twitter account flags up every YA cliché in the book (literally!). And to win a copy of Brooding YA Hero's first novel, see below! |

NEWSLETTER GIVEAWAY Here's your next great read! |

Brooding YA Hero, aka Broody McHottiepants, is the most likely hero of any piece of young adult fiction. Brought first to Twitter, and now to bookshelves by the wonderful Carrie DiRisio, Broody's debut novel, Becoming a main character (almost) as awesome as me, is the greatest tool any YA writer needs to create the most perfectly familiar hero for any new book. YA readers too will delight in recognizing every trope dragged onto a page by an author desperate to publish something! Or... in reality, perhaps the subheading for this book should be How to avoid every trope and cliché in the book - surely a must-read for every YA author or any YA reader! |
