2018 Reading Challenge!

We've decided to do a Reading Challenge that doesn't involve any gimmicks or prizes. We want to show kids that it's fun to read just for the sake of reading. There are 12 categories from which they can pick - one for each month of the year. You can recommend books on our Padlet page. Click on the button below to access it. Audiobooks in the

Public Domain!

Did you know there are thousands of audiobooks available in the public domain? We provide access to one of the best sites for these resources. It's called LibriVox. Students and teachers can browse by author, title, genre/subject, or language. Books are read by volunteers, so if you're really motivated, you can sign up to record a book! Click on the image to the left for access to this great website. Click on the button below for access to their catalog.

Teacher Resource of the Month

NoveList Plus is a database you can use to search for fiction and non-fiction books. They allow searching by genre, read alikes, award winners, and more! There are also Book Discussion Guides with questions and answers and suggestions for further reading; book cover images and first chapter excerpts; feature articles, and BookTalks. Click on the image to the right for access to the database. Click on the button below for Curricular Connections.

Reminder: If you're outside the high school, you need to create an account in MARVEL! to access this database. Contact the librarians for help with this, if necessary.

Lesson of the Month

For this month's example, we chose to highlight one of our longer research lessons we did with a Science teacher for a mid-term project. Students researched a topic, in this case a cancer type, and filled out a graphic organizer for each source. Once their research was done, students used templates in Canva (created by Natalie Skovran) to create presentations that were converted into flipbooks using Issuu. Students viewed their classmates' final products for their midterms. Did you know that CVOD has TEDTalks?

"TEDTalks: Trevor Timm: How Free Is Our Freedom of the Press?"

"In the U.S., the press has a right to publish secret information the public needs to know, protected by the First Amendment. Government surveillance has made it increasingly more dangerous for whistleblowers, the source of virtually every important story about national security since 9/11, to share information. In this concise, informative talk, Freedom of the Press Foundation co-founder and TED Fellow Trevor Timm traces the recent history of government action against individuals who expose crime and injustice and advocates for technology that can help them do it safely and anonymously." -CVOD

"In 1986, a shy and intelligent twenty-year-old named Christopher Knight left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the forest. He would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later, when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even through brutal winters, he had survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store edibles and water, and to avoid freezing to death. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothing, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed but terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. Based on extensive interviews with Knight himself, this is a vividly detailed account of his secluded life--why did he leave? what did he learn?--as well as the challenges he has faced since returning to the world. It is a gripping story of survival that asks fundamental questions about solitude, community, and what makes a good life, and a deeply moving portrait of a man who was determined to live his own way, and succeeded."

"In The Power of Different, psychiatrist and bestselling author Gail Saltz examines the latest scientific discoveries, profiles famous geniuses who have been diagnosed with all manner of brain “problems”―including learning disabilities, ADD, anxiety, Depression, Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and Autism―and tells the stories of lay individuals to demonstrate how specific deficits in certain areas of the brain are directly associated with the potential for great talent. Saltz shows how the very conditions that cause people to experience difficulty at school, in social situations, at home, or at work, are inextricably bound to creative, disciplinary, artistic, empathetic, and cognitive abilities. In this pioneering work, readers will find engaging scientific research and stories from historical geniuses and everyday individuals who have not only made the most of their conditions, but who have flourished because of them."

Did you know...?

...you can search many of our databases by reading level? Often, students access articles that are much too difficult for them to comprehend. Having them select the appropriate reading level during the search process will allow them to access the most readable sources for their project or paper. Click on the image to the left for access to Gale Virtual Reference Library which houses thousands of easy-to-read articles. Click on the button below to access a one-sheet "How-To" for searching the Gale databases.
