Dear Friends, At this writing, most people nearby are preparing for Beryl, which is expected to move across eastern Texas. It has been watched closely since it formed as a cyclone in the Western Atlantic Ocean on June 28. Beryl then skirted across the Carribean islands as a major hurricane, causing extensive damage (like the historic Anglican church on St. Vincent island) and loss of life. But here in the Brazos Valley, most of us are looking longingly with crossing fingers that we'll get a decent rain from the much less forceful Beryl. The path of a hurricane is not unlike that of some human souls. When it becomes obvious that something is developing out in the ocean, a name is given. Ever so slowly this named event grows through a series of stages, and experts can pretty much predict what impact it will have. Some veer into society in powerfully harmful ways. Others circle around and live out their journey never harming another thing. Some are initially forceful or destructive in one part of their life then turn their best qualities to good in the latter part. That's what we're about at Middleway - the part of one's journey where peace and comfort and hope can circle in goodness, no matter what previous parts of our journey have looked like. Circle with us this month. We want to be a part of your journey. |

WEDNESDAY: Religion in Aggieland Displayed Each month through August, Middleway is hosting a display of unique religious items found at thrift stores and resale markets in and around the Brazos Valley. An exhibit of Icons and devotional objects will be viewable in July. “Finding Religion in Aggieland” is part of a project led by spiritual director Heidi Campbell, who is studying where religion shows up in thrift stores and what stories secondhand culture tells about contemporary religion in Texas. She'll give a brief talk about the display Wednesday, July 10 at 6:30 p.m. Each month new items will be added to the display related to a theme about prayer. May's jewels and beads are still on exhibit with June's prayer stools and tools. |
