Cultural Conversations Nelson Aotearoa New Zealand 

Cultural Conversations is a community-based arts hub that facilitates opportunities for people from Nelson’s former refugee and migrant communities to share music, art and storytelling through creative programmes, workshops, and events. The primary outcome of these sessions is to enhance knowledge, awareness, and appreciation for the cultural diversity that makes up the Nelson region as well as wider Aotearoa New Zealand.We believe that everyone deserves to be welcomed and included, and that nobody should be isolated or lonely. We recognise that people coming together around the arts can be transformational for our communities.We have recently moved into the realm of social enterprise with a craft group of women and children.Despite our growing diversity, former refugees, recent migrants and members from ethnic communities have voiced over many years the challenges they face when it comes to finding meaningful employment, progressing in their careers and feeling that they cannot bring their full identities to work. These issues have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to help lift employment outcomes for former refugees, recent migrants and ethnic communities.However, the potential of harnessing these skills, knowledge, and experience is not always optimised. Groups within these population groups continue to face systemic barriers to access and success in the labour market. This presents a huge opportunity cost for New Zealand.We believe that all people have intrinsic and equal value, and that everyone deserves justice, peace and opportunity.
