The Importance of Shaping and Prompting

Happy December! Before the year is over let’s talk about a strategy that is used every day in ABA sessions. Shaping is a process of differently reinforcing successive approximations to a target behavior, meaning a large goal is broken down into smaller steps that are each individually reinforced. This method is seen when teaching vocal behavior, self-care skills, play skills and academic skills.

For example, when teaching a client to say bubbles, start off by accepting “buh” as the initial approximation. Once the child can say “buh buh” the previous approximation “buh” is no longer reinforced. Then the approximation of “buh buh” is shaped into the target behavior of saying “bubbles” and all other approximations are placed on extinction. Shaping can be a timely process. To increase efficiency, prompting is a strategy that can be used alongside shaping. Prompts are anything that you do to help the client perform the correct response. Prompts can look like implementing hand over hand with a client to tie their shoe or providing a tracing worksheet to help a client write the letter 'A'. When using this method, remember to implement least to most prompting. A prompt is only effective when the client can respond to it.

Jessica's advice to BCBA candidates is "be as involved in the work of a BCBA as possible. Take initiative! It is hard to make time for it and there is so many other things to take care of, but all this hard work will pay off in the near future. Believe in yourself!"
