Hello, all the noses. Welcome to our monthly update from Gatsby. Here’s what happened at Nose of Gatsby this month. This news ledger is sure to brighten your day. So, grab a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy!

Color Changes Leaves Drop

Just like plants, human beings also experience transitional changes due to seasonality. When the season changes from summer to fall, we tend to slow down both externally and internally. Our bodies naturally reduce metabolism to conserve energy in preparation for winter. As humidity decreases and the air becomes drier, we recommend drinking warm antioxidant-rich green teas or nutritious vegetable soups. It's also beneficial to deep clean your face and body bi-weekly to remove dead skin cells.

Fall Equinox

The first day of Fall, the Autumnal Equinox, was Sunday, September 22nd. For us in the Pacific Time Zone, the actual equinox occurred at 5:43 a.m. In addition to the typical seasonal changes (and dreaded loss of daylight), for the Pacific Northwest, Autumn is also a time when we have the highest chance of seeing the Northern Lights. The equinox is also known to mess with satellites in orbit (and a lot of internet connections), as most satellites travel along or near the equator and the increased direct sunlight on the equator can damage satellites.

The word Equinox derives from two Latin words. Aequi means equal and nox means night. The Romans would have called it equinoctial. In Astrology, September 22 is the last day of the Zodiac sign of Virgo. A person born on the 23rd would be a Libra.

The Fall Equinox has been a date of historic societal significance since the dawn of the ancient world. The Mayans built temples and the Druids constructed structures like Stonehenge that are aligned with the sun for the Summer and Winter Solstices and the Autumnal and Vernal Equinoxes. The Mid-Autumn, or Moon Festival, in traditional Chinese Culture also takes place around this time of year to celebrate the Harvest Moon. This year it was September 17th. During the festival lanterns are lit and displayed, people have outside barbecues with loved ones, and mooncakes (delicious pastries that come in many variations but usually contain egg yolk) are eaten.

September the 22nd is also a date of special magnificence for the inhabitants of Middle Earth. This is the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, though the date is by Shire Reckoning. The calendar the hobbits use is slightly different from the Gregorian calendar, placing their birthday somewhere between September 12 and 14. The 22nd also marked the first day of Tolkien Week, which is particularly noteworthy this year as 2024 is the 70th anniversary of the original publication of The Fellowship of the Ring.
