90 Years Young

Inspiring stories of seniors thriving in our table tennis program

Meet Dorothy - a vibrant 91 year old

Dorothy is a participant in our Table Tennis program at the Varsity Lakes Community Resource Centre. Her life has been nothing short of extraordinary. From working for the Australian embassy in Bangkok to living in 10 different countries, Dorothy has a wealth of experiences to share.

Table tennis holds a special place in Dorothy's heart. Unable to play golf or tennis anymore, she found solace in this fast-paced sport. During her travels on ships, she discovered table tennis setups and honed her skills while sailing the seas.

Dorothy's quick wit and funny jokes light up the room. When asked about the rewards of getting older, she humorously replies, "there aren't any." Her two sons, born in different countries, fill her with pride.

Dorothy imparts valuable life advice: keep reading. She believes in the power of knowledge and its ability to enrich our lives continuously.

As she reflects on her legacy, Dorothy hopes to be remembered as a good citizen who made a positive impact on her community. Her infectious spirit and zest for life serve as an inspiration to us all.

Thank you for your time Dorothy! You are a treasure to speak to!

Meet Elsa - a sprightly 93!

Elsa is the oldest member of our Tuesday Table Tennis Program. Despite her age, Elsa continues to play table tennis every week at the VLCRC. Her love for the sport began in her youth and has remained a lifelong passion.

Alongside her active lifestyle, Elsa finds joy in the friendly community of Varsity Lakes, where she has formed meaningful connections with her neighbours. One of her walking companions is a young man who lost his mother, and Elsa values the genuine care and companionship within her community.

Family holds a special place in Elsa’s heart, and her two daughters, who are currently travelling the world, bring her immense pride and happiness. Elsa’s positive outlook on ageing is truly inspiring. She embraces each day with enthusiasm, going for walks, playing table tennis, and taking care of her body and mind.

For Elsa, age is just a number, and she encourages others to prioritise self-care, eat well and cultivate happiness. Her legacy lies in her family’s well-being and happiness, and her journey serves as a reminder to embrace life fully and nurture meaningful connections with others, regardless of age.

If you are eager to join Dorothy and Elsa for a game of table tennis we invite you to please come along to the VLCRC on

Tuesdays at 9:00am or 12:30pm for the afternoon session

Please note: there is a weekly fee for participation
