Culture of PEACE

Our world and our nation needs a culture of peace, not of war and division. The culture we currently have is one of death and destruction. Sometimes I say to people, "Permaculture is the opposite of what we are currently doing."

Permaculture is a culture of peace. It is based on the ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Future Care. Imagine a world where we lived by these cultural norms.....

Peacebuilding comes down to Community Building

When we treat our neighbors (and our neighboring countries) with respect and compassion we will build a peaceful culture on this planet. What are you doing to build peace and community?

One thing our local permaculture community is doing is to promote peace is the "caring and sharing economy." We do this by hosting monthly potlucks and giving away the surplus to others. Our next potluck is on November 12th at 1pm at Our Global Family Farm. Bring cooked food, produce, clothing, and plants to share with others. You are invited to come. We truly are in all this together!

We also donate our produce weekly to the Food Not Bombs meal and food share held on Sunday afternoons at 1pm at Mitchell Park! That is reciprocity in action!

Community Partnerships

The SLO Permaculture Guild has been building partnerships with a few community groups lately.....Santa Barbara Permaculture Network, Beaver Brigade, Ecologistics Bioneers, Harvestly.org, Cal Poly College Corps, Food Not Bombs, Achievement House, & Cuesta College Community Programs.

Here are few snippets below of examples of community partners...

Plant Propagation Workshop with 7th Generation in partnership with Cuesta College Community Programs

Saturday, October 28th 9am to 3pm

San Luis Obispo Campus of Cuesta College

Take a deep dive with the 7th Generation Design team into the world of plant propagation for fun and profit- whether that’s increasing the beauty, health, or yields of your property or an income-generating enterprise to support other projects. Learn how to grow plants with highly-branch, non-circling root structures from seeds and cuttings that will do in 1 year what a typical commercial nursery plant will do in 3. Get hands-on experience with simple, low-cost, and scale able systems for growing a huge array of plants in an incredibly small footprint. Bring your own lunch.

Community Day Based Program

This program for developmentally disabled adults comes to visit Our Global Family Farm on a regular basis. This past week they helped to put cardboard ontop of weeds to surpress weeds and to build a new ecosystem.

The intent with this new program design is to provide innovative and enriching daily services for program participants. Training will include community-based activities that focus on daily living skills, job preparation and integrated volunteer work, healthy living skills development, self-advocacy, safety, mobility, housing, and social/recreational activities.

Nature Based Birthday Parties

Our Global Family Farm recently hosted families of toddlers for a Two Year Old Birthday Party. It was such a delight to have all these young children at the farm enjoying the plants, the insects, the food and the friendships with other families. They even had Indigenous Food to eat and nature based party favors.

We are exploring the idea of hosting more birthay parties at the farm. Let me know if you might be interested in having a birthday party at our glorious permaculture garden.

College Corps Members at Our Global Family Farm

We are quite blessed to have Cal Poly student interns working at our permaculture demonstration farm, Our Global Family Farm, on Sundays.

Come and meet Grace, Mahnoor, Giselle and Sandra when they come to work on the farm Sundays, 9am to 12noon. Each week we have a hands-on lesson in permaculture farming techniques such as building compost piles, planting cover crop seeds, planting companion plants, and harvesting.
