Home Fields at @Cool Change

Thanks to Jimmy and the team at Cool Change Bar and Eatery in Martinborough who featured Home Fields 2021 Pinot Noir and 2022 Rosé as “wine of the month” in June!

Amazing work by their blackboard artist!

2023 Season

Zeus the Cloud Gatherer threw everything at us across 2022-23; rain, hard frost, rain, even snow!

It has been 2 unrelenting seasons in a row in Wairarapa region. Paling in comparison to extremes experienced in other parts of the country but nevertheless, tough conditions. The learning curve has been Hors Categorie! Still, good humour & lots of support got us through & we were rewarded with great yields, clean fruit & quality wines.

Even so, successive all-nighters fighting frost & endless days of leaf plucking meant we spent a lot of time in a doolally state! For example ... an insight into cultural practices in the vineyard across 2022-23 ... the Spotify most played tracks by the Home Fields vineyard crew (that's Brent) over the last 12 months:

Let's hope that the music does not influence the vines in an adverse way!

Incidentally, until we scraped this Spotify data we had no idea the most played track referenced pruning! Peculiar. Great piratical shanty though! perfect whether you are hauling away at anchor or indeed pruning.

Burnt Ships!

What the hell are the Eddys doing?! A fair question many of you have been too polite to ask. A complex of reasons lie behind our lurch from city to rural/wine life. Ultimately, wanted to do honest work, with integrity that results in something tangible & beautiful that brings pleasure to people's lives in some small way.

Beyond this, Caroline missed a calling in molecular biology, chemistry or similar & loves wine, so studying winemaking & making wine seemed to make sense.

Brent is, of course, a peasant, so ... vineyard labouring for him.

Three seasons on, we have learnt a lot. Often, the hard way! But it seems we can produce quality wine. Not for us to say so but we can relay that others attest to the calibre being "right up there". So that's good!

We expanded the operation last season & will do so again this year - on the proviso that our exchange of capital for a handful of beans as it were, can achieve a kind of payoff; a notch above subsistence will do! Look forward to sharing news.

For now, it is a pleasure to offer you our wines. We think they are pretty fine. As are most wines from this region. Our sincerest hope is that you come to love them like we do. Enjoy!
