Do you know of the first Puerto Rican woman to revive the Presidential Medal of Freedom?

Antonia Pantoja was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1922. Growing up Antonia struggled with the hardship of financially supporting her family, who were not supportive of her lesbian identity. At the age of 22, Antonia moved to New York City in 1944, looking for a new start. In the 1940s, New York’s Puerto Rican community was exploding. However, many Puerto Ricans faced discrimination despite the fact that they where American citizens. Being in New York was the first time Antonia experienced segregation.

Unhappy with the conditions her community was subjected to, Antonia devoted her life and career to the advancement of Puerto Ricans. She founded ASPIRA, an organization that has helped over 50,000 Latino students with counseling and financial aid. She also helped establish Spanish language classes in NYC schools for struggling Latino students. Though she was asked many times to run for public office, she always refused out of fear of being outed. Antonia received many awards throughout her career, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Who are the Dream Defenders?

Dream Defenders is a multi-racial organization aimed at defunding police and prisons. The organization was founded in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing when the group’s founders occupied the Florida State Capitol for 31 days. Their occupation was successful, as lawmakers eventually came out to speak to the group. Ever since then, Dream Defenders has worked tirelessly to end the injustice of police and prisons and move to a more equitable society.
