Gardening adds years to your life and life to your years. Our neighbors from the Our Place Campus are beginning to reap the benefits of the garden at their backdoor. Families have been busy in the garden helping with row crop preparation, planting, weeding, and watering. |

June was a busy month behind the scenes. We are working on a lot of construction details that will guarantee the crop fields are ready for cover crops later in the season so we can enjoy a full growing season in 2023. We also began planning with the Washoe County Human Services Agency team on the Our Place Campus. We are planning a full calendar of programming that will begin in July to get more neighbors into the garden. Here are some highlights from the last month. - The garden at Our Place is getting a fence! The fence will protect the in-ground plants and drip lines from the heavy pedestrian traffic we get each day. We are hopeful the fence install will begin by the end of July and will take approximately four weeks to complete.
- We harvested over 25-pounds of fresh vegetables from the garden at Saint Mary's. The food was delivered to the Reno Food Pantry, which serves homebound seniors, and the Crossroads women's campus.
- Warm weather crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are in the ground at both gardens for fall harvest.
- We are harvesting garlic. We began harvesting garlic the last week of June and harvested more than 200 pounds of garlic by the end of the month.
- Volunteers logged a total of 81.5 hours in the garden during the month of June.

Thank you to the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation for the generous grant of $10,000. Robert Z. Hawkins had a vision for helping those less fortunate, and the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation has honored his legacy through their support of many charitable organizations in Northern Nevada since 1980. We will use the Foundation’s contribution to the community to develop our crop fields over the coming months, which will create an additional 19,600 square feet of growing space ensuring a bountiful 2023 growing season. |
