WRITER'S CREED

Don't be AFRAID to Write Horror

By Michelle D. Jackson, Author & BWW Founder

This week's e-newsletter is dedicated to writers who love to scare us. These are the fearless pen-masters whose bone-chilling horror stories derive from active imaginations, frightening nightmares, and unexplainable personal experiences. We love the terror they write! We encourage book lovers to pick up a horror novel written by a black author and live vicariously through their eyes. We also hope to inspire black writers interested in the horror genre to use the power of the pen to share a horrifying story that we will never forget.

How to Write a Horror Story in 7 Steps

Written by MasterClass

Horror is a genre of storytelling that taps into the emotion of fear. Horror writing is sometimes categorized within the broader category of thrillers, but not all horror follows the thriller structure. Classic horror fiction—whether expressed as a novel, novella, short story, or film—will tap into topics that reliably frighten most humans. Common topics include ghosts, werewolves, vampires, zombies, serial killers, murderers, and the fear of the unknown.
