from the studio

Sorry for the delay in this monthly recap, there was a lot that went on in the studio in June, so much so that I needed to extend the month by a few days-which is my nice way to say, everything took a little longer than expected but I am done with my portraits for the ArtsBuild residency and moved out of the studio! -the last part was quite the feat because you know I really made myself at home in that space. I am so grateful for Jazmine at ELLA Studio for the extended hospitality while I finished up working on those pieces. Now its on to the next!

June was definitely a marathon on casting in the studio! I was able to get the molds done for both the portraits AND cast them both in plaster and resin. That is basically all I did for the month of June and even though it was a really enjoyable time, my body feels like it went to bootcamp. Once plans are finalized for their showing with the ArtsBuild, I will pass that information on so maybe you can join if you are free :)

Here is a detail shot of Sherry's portrait in plaster as a sneak preview.

If you are curious about the mold-making/casting process and want to follow along day-by-day, I made some short Instagram videos each day. The link below will take you to Day 1 of Casting Week pouring the liquid silicone to Day 8 casting in resin.

Casting Week Day 1

I started a small new commission this month that I will be really excited to share in the fall when it is done and gifted. A wife is having a small torso of her made in bronze as an 8th year wedding anniversary. If you follow the tradition of anniversary gifts, 8 is the year of bronze. Fitting because 8 is the symbol of infinity and bronzes do last forever. I love that she thought to gift and hope to be able to make an easy and affordable anniversary gift package that can be purchased 6 month ahead of the gifting date to allow for the foundry process. If you or someone you know might be interested in that, let me know!

Well I suppose I can say I started a new painting series in lieu of the flower meditation drawings for June. These might've been an even bigger act of meditation in their making and honestly I am a little obsessed with how visually striking this wall hanging is in a space. For the most part they are quite large in scale and somehow between all the casting work, I found myself multi-tasking and making 4 of them, starting with the largest one first. I am really excited to explore more color possibilities soon after doing a cobalt series- but for right now, this black and white has my heart.

Happy start of the official summer! Normally this is the time of year where I let my hair down a little bit but I don't think I was home very much this month other than to eat and sleep because of all the casting. I did manage to enjoy a few good off days a couple of the weekends and some nice date nights though. We attended the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra's Benefit at the Rosecomb Bar the first weekend. We love going there for a date night in the winter months but still hadn't made it to their garden area. It really is so beautiful and it paired nicely with the quartet that played for the entire afternoon. Looking forward to more time in the sunshine and garden in July.

For Blakes birthday this month we went to Attack of the Tatsu for the first time and loved it! If you are nearby and like Japanese food (with a little twist) we both highly recommend checking it out, it was delicious!

recipe of the month

This is a perfect summer recipe. Fresh and a little on the spicy side and honestly, its deceivingly filling.

*just a side note if you feel like you have leftover seasoning for the salmon, you don't have to try to pack it all on there.
